If sickness has struck me, anguish has not driven me

To anything blameworthy, nor has terror toyed with me.

Nor did I grieve for myself as deeply as did

My soul for others, who were abased yet felt no anguish.

How many of Arabdom's sins weigh upon my soul!

And her oppressors are criminals and profiteers:

    Rulers without faith or honor,

And usurpers whose utmost nobility is greed,

And jesters with their buffoonery, who have fashioned

From it heroism of many hues—how often they have deceived!

O censurers of those who brought our nation's glory low,

Abandon hypocrisy, for you are all alike in doing harm.

But for you, the barbarian would not have violated our honor,

Nor would delusions and heresies have tyrannized over us.

And so we remain—how many a band has suffered,

Whose constitution is ignorance, or whose constitution is cowrie shells.

Qat and cannabis inspire its heedlessness,

So it never comes to its senses, nor does panic draw near it.

And around it, fire screams with aggression,

As though today there were no listener within it.

Oh, if only I could cleanse her,

And rouse sleepers who have crouched in death,

And make a sword the judge of her petty men,

Those who destroy her with what they have spread and what they have amassed.

And cut off her tails, who have grown practiced

In debauchery, and called their debauchery piety.

And rouse all the Arabs, every one of them,

As a lion is roused when it is attacked.

Truly, I am deeply grieved when I watch her—

    The wolf brings her to ruin, or the hyena brings her to ruin;

And all around her, the foxes, in their heroism,

Have left no room for any further guile.

And all my strength lies in verse I freely give,

As I freely give my breaths to those who listen.
