    وإنيّ مقيم ما أقام عَسيب

    O our neighbor, the place of visitation is near;

And I shall remain as long as Asib remains.

O our neighbor, we are two strangers right here,

And every stranger is kin to a stranger.

Ah, and ah! My burning anguish is no

    Complaint, but a lion's rage.

O harshness of the world, O its treachery,

Never have you wronged anyone as you have me.

Do you remember when you wept, trying

To turn me back—were you better versed in fate?

But I accepted only my bold advance

As a guide, and faced hardships like a lion.

My companion wept when he saw the pass ahead,

And knew for certain that we would reach Caesar.

I told him, 'Let not your eye weep; we only

Seek a kingdom, or die and so be excused.'

O my sores, have you not had your fill?

For my body blazes and is no longer tender,

Falling like scattered fragments of a

Star; the fallen star has melted into a flash.

Not flesh, nor blood, but radiance

And hope you have cast to the ground today.

O my sores, show no mercy, O my sores,

If I live like dust, humiliated and abased.

Neither my soul nor my body belongs to this world,

And I wished I could be stripped away from it.

Are these strains, I wonder, the melodies of a sorcerer

Who folded away the ages in kindness to my hopes?

And is that warbling bird an ally

Bound to him, its song a measure of lament?

Is this my feeling, or a dead man's whisperings?

And this my sight, or the misgivings of my unrest?

Had I sought the humblest livelihood,

A little money would have sufficed, without my seeking it.

    But I seek deep-rooted glory,

And those like me may attain deep-rooted glory.

May al-Lat pardon the birds whose song I love,

Even if it were sorcery upon me, for my helplessness and neglect.

Ah, how sweet they are, whatever their state!

And never have they cared for kingship or fears.

As though the birds' hearts, fresh and dried,

Beside their nest, were jujubes and withered, worthless dates.

I drank with Caesar in his kingdom,

He gave me a fine mount, and I rode the post-horse.

Whenever we crowded together on a track,

I outstripped the outrider by far.

And I have roamed the horizons until

I was content with my return as spoils.

O sun of day, is there no way

To thwart the tricks of darkness that you know?

How often you waged renewed war against it,

And it fled from you without shame.

Will it devour me if you vanish from me—

Me, the shattered star in the dust?

Answer me, answer me, for I

Suffer from my sores as I suffer.

Though my soul rises proudly above the pains,

And the most enduring meanings fill its pride,

I suffer them and conceal them, as though I were

A faithful keeper of time's secret.

And O these wafting breaths of radiance,

    And O these dancing vines,

    And O these blossoms, daughters

    Pampered and varied in beauty,

    And O these smiling breezes,

That pressed their lips upon my imagination,

Are you the healing, come as a loved one

To console me, having heard my supplication?

Has the day passed, and have I missed, from its sun,

That height that glittered above the sky?

Likewise my life never saw its dawn

Spread its light, nor gained the blaze of noon.

Evening followed morning's desire, yet I attained no

Glory that gleamed in the sky and soared.

    Laugh, O my sores,

    And bite into my skin.

    Laugh at my wandering

    In the breeze's deception.

My life was lost in vain,

Just as my kingdom was lost.

    لو دَرَى كان يبكي

    He who did wrong did not know;

Had he known, he would have wept.

The noonday blaze—I never saw it,

And likewise my glory—I never saw it.

All that surrounds me is a

    Smiling death within a grave.

How contemptible the world is to one

    Who lifts life above greed!

Ah, ah, my heart! A hell—

My whole body is a hell that does not abate.

Around me, amid the bounty of spring,

Are watering places that neither stint nor run dry.

And where is a hand to quench the thirst within me?

And where are the beauties, fluttering for it?

    O lights above the

    Grass, O purest nectar,

Revive me; I am like one

Drunk, gullible, unable to sober up.

I was intoxicated by the surge of

Fever, and so I lost the way.

Would that I knew: does my sickness

    Tell of Caesar's treachery?

    Is that a hidden poison

    Which my heart's beating feels?

What! Was your robe, which you gave me,

    Tainted with overpowering poison?

How vile is Caesar, if his astounding feat

Is confounding a wanderer and killing a poet!

We are children of the spheres, bounded neither by

The illusion of time nor stumbling existence.

We build laws through feelings alone,

And spurn the decrees of ever-turning fate.

O my life, night has given warning

Of the extinguishing of my lamp.

    Here is the sun, greeting

Me, and the time for my departure has come.

Here are the pains, now eased,

    Though they may be dissembling.

Here is the earth, revealing itself,

    Growing wet with scattered tears.

It has wept for me; and the weeping of the

    Earth—my mother—is like my rejoicing.

    To her I am going,

And my agonies are my farewell.

Who, I wonder, went so far in painting

And scattering pigments over the sky?

Is this my blood? Yes, indeed, my blood,

    Spilled through my scorching sores.

Toward me—has it taken fright at my departure?

For fever's chains show no favor.

My weakness compels me, and my heart falters,

As a little child falters into sobbing.

    And you, O stars,

    Windows onto the unseen,

    What is your hidden secret?

Is it the calamity of hearts?

    You appear like eyes

    To the vanquisher of ghouls,

    And my mad mind

    Gazes at them, drunk.

    And you, O stars...
