Are those sunbeams, or the echo of my poems

returning to my heart with love and secrets?

And these quivering particles—are they filled with

jewels, or are these sparks of my thoughts?

Yes, they dispersed from my fire and my light,

having danced in the sun the dance of the debauched.

They went toward the one I love and returned like

a wine-seller's victim, after frolicking around me.

Then you are like me, little one—except that

I am the burdened captive of my prison and my sins.

And nothing is harsher than a conscience reproaching

an innocent person; no tyrant's oppression has equaled it.

I shall shuffle in these irons, atoning,

though once I walked in splendor among flowers.

And how far I am from finding ease and contentment!

You will find them, once you have atoned through imprisonment for your sin.

You received a punishment for pride, decreed by

the law of love when I turned away from your love.

Look toward the little window; you will find the light carrying me to you.

The light now holds, from the trees' shade,

images that elude me and dance upon the lifeless wall.

And it is as though my fate has stumbled over these shadows,

so they fell, stained like my hopes with the despairing one's humiliation.

Hasten, then, and come, my hope, toward a graceful escape.

    Indeed, I expose myself wherever

the paths take me, when love incites others against me.

For there are my voice, my breaths, and my eye,

betraying my heart and so delivering me to torment.

How can I escape? Awake, naïve one! Rather, it is folly

not to flee, even if I lose my hopes.

No living person accepts oppression when his feelings hold

the secret of life; nor does he consent to shackles.

    Laugh, O my sorrows,

    and sleep, O passion,

and rise up, O my madness,

    in the passion for revenge.

And my revenge is not with a sword of mine that I unsheathe,

but with the reed pen, which the assistant fears.

    Patience, then, Ibn Abdus—for tomorrow

you shall gulp poison when you meet Ibn Zaydun.

You shall gulp poison as verse without equal,

whose mockery makes stones and weepers laugh.

O you who lord it over the artist, oppressing him

with money and falsehood—you do not know the life-givers.

    بل البعادُ يزيدُ القربَ تمكينا

    However far away they go, distance causes no separation;

rather, distance makes their closeness firmer.

O thief of the lovely rose, you think it

wealth—shame on you! You do not know fragrant plants.

You were dubbed the mouse; those who described you did you no justice,

for the mouse toils, oppressed and cheated,

while you toy with minds, safe and secure,

making the theft of minds seem fair.

Only a wanton sinner steals roses,

whose heart has embraced neither kindness nor faith.

Whereas bread may be stolen by one whom

life has betrayed and made wretched in many ways.

And a plunderer of wealth holds, in crime, a place

higher than the plunderer who annihilates our hopes.

Then, my beloved, hasten; do not prolong my anxiety.

Indeed, I await our meeting in longing,

a longing beyond its describer's power to define,

in feeling and meaning, in words and explanation.

You will see me when you seek me.

Yes, you will see me if, without faltering, you venture

to escape into my dream, into my enchantments.

I am she whose rapture inspired art in you,

and it shall never be shackled by prison or time.

Hasten, and devise a way to escape tomorrow,

and heed neither grudges nor discord.

For people, since they were created, have been foes of those who excel,

and they are slaves before idols and dung-heaps.
