Or ask those who ply prostitution: how often

they exchanged filth with him, never wearying.

He made the people his object of mockery,

and deemed it lawful to debase the standing of men.

How often we were deceived before by his deeds,

and took them as a model of perfection.

But then events reveal his secret:

a calamity surpassing the abysses of endurance.

when the people are donkeys and mules?

    without indignation, struggle, and fighting.

Every land that has grown a pulpit for me

is my land, and it is sun and shade.

And if I squander my existence in vain,

the world loses worth in my eyes, and my existence vanishes.
