    My consolation, halt where you are, O my consolation!

    For I see you as nothing but a hypocrite.

    I have forsaken you since I came to know a world's vicissitudes,

    A world that deceives us with the hues of annihilation.

    Nor are you, in any circumstance, one to be hoped for,

    To be offered to the brother of great self-respect—

    أحبَّ الشاعريةِ والذكاء

    To the free man in whom I befriended

    The dearest poetic sensibility and intelligence;

    ولكن في ابتسامِ الكبرياءِ

    And one who folds his heart around sorrows,

    Yet with the smile of pride;

    وإن بعدَ الوُجودُ عن الِضباءِ

    And one whose gaze upon the universe is light,

    Though existence be far from radiance;

    And one who knew life, however high it rose,

    As annihilation that has evolved from annihilation.

    So it is enough for me to fashion him a hope

    From patience clouded with weeping,

    And from a faithful heart that does not dissemble,

    And from a pure love that makes no false show:

    That he may live as a refuge for aspirations,

    Even if they were buried alive and lost in dust.
