    Eid al-Fitr has come with hopes we renew.

    Life is indeed hopes and renewal.

    Were it not for our attachment to hopes, which we worship,

    Eid would not be honored—indeed, Eid would not be known.

    وقبّلتني بنجواها الأناشيد

    Those who prayed joined the dawn in prayer, and it kissed them;

    And the hymns kissed me with their whispered confidences.

    Ah, if only I were well-being itself, like the dawn,

    So no constraint within it could hold back my prayer,

    And I could inhale fragrance amid dreams spreading their shade,

    As though they were support from God's good pleasure,

    وإن سكت فنبض القلب توحيد

    And weave love from my heart into a mu'allaqa ode;

    And if I fall silent, the heart's beat affirms God's oneness.

    Welcome to a gentle Eid that love has blessed,

    And newborn feelings have blessed it.

    As though the Night of Decree that had passed

    Had given birth to them, and traditions had fashioned them.

    I asked my Lord for inspiration in which to seek refuge,

    For my life is reflection and sleeplessness.

    Then inspiration told me: live for people, all of them,

    Even if most of them are wrongdoers and drunken brawlers.

    ففي يديه إذا شاؤوا المقاليد

    And make Eid a principle through which strength is gained,

    For in its hands, if they wish, lie the keys of power;

    The principle of aspiring to reform that embraces them,

    As the deserts look longingly toward the oasis.

    An Eid through which Islam illuminated exemplars

    Of majesty; within it, light is birdsong.

    The Eid of peace and Eid al-Fitr have been joined

    Through the ages, for peace is an Eid celebration.

    والسلم كالحب لم يعرفه تحديد

    Every celebration of it traces back to peace;

    And peace, like love, has never known bounds.

    وعاشق الحرب رغم الزهو رعديد

    Whoever loves peace is free, stands tall, and is a hero;

    And the lover of war, despite his swagger, is a coward.

    So pour upon us beauty of your own making,

    O Eid, and wipe away the tears of sorrow, O Eid.

    And indeed I, in your auspicious name, in my joy,

    Sing and appeal, as though singing could set things right.

    I call to lands whose slumber ignorance has prolonged,

    So that they awaken, for sleep is a threat.

    And the principle of Islam's nations is nothing but

    Knowledge, endeavor, reform, and immortalization.

    If these elude them, then Islam is not their creed,

    And all praise of them is lamentation and funeral eulogy.

    And if they vie with others in their noble deeds,

    Then neither injustice nor waste will beset them.

    And its glory will return to Islam,

    As the valiant dead rose high through it.
