فيin ودِّكَyour affection الجمّabundant أوor فيin لطفكyour gentleness الغدِقِoverflowing
My brother Habib, I am grateful for your kindnesses,
In your abundant affection or in your overflowing gentleness.
سألتَyou asked عنيَabout me مشكوراًdeserving thanks وماand not سألتthey asked
هذىthese الجموعthe crowds التيthat منfor أجلهاtheir sake أرقَىmy sleeplessness (probable reading)
You asked after me—my thanks—while they did not:
These crowds for whose sake I lose sleep.
كمmany a مجلسٍgathering لكَof yours أهواهثI love it (apparent typo) ويُسعدنيand it gladdens me
بماwith what بهis in it منof معانيmeanings النورlight والشَّفقِand twilight
Many a gathering of yours I love, and it gladdens me
With the meanings of light and twilight it contains.
وأنشدُand I recite الشعرَpoetry نيراناًflames فتجعلهاthen you make them
مثلَlike النميرِpure water اذاwhen أصغيتَyou listen فيin حَرقىِmy burning anguish
And I recite poetry as flames, and you make them
Like pure water when you listen amid my burning anguish.
نضجتyou have matured سناًin years وعقلاًand in mind مثلماjust as نضجتthey have matured
هذىthese الكواكبُthe stars فيin وحىٍinspiration وفيand in أَلقِradiance
You have matured in years and mind, just as have
These stars in inspiration and radiance.
ولمand have not تزلyou cease فيin شبابٍyouth فوقَbeyond أخيلتيmy imaginings
وَمعدنَand a mine الأدبِliterature الوضَّاءِradiant والخلقِand moral character
And you remain young beyond my imaginings,
And a mine of radiant literature and moral character.
والناسُand people صنفانِtwo kinds مُسدٍa giver of kindness لاno جزاءreward لهfor him
غيرُother than العقوقِingratitude ومُجدٍand a benefactor مصَّwas sucked dry بالعلقِby leeches
And people are of two kinds: one who gives, whose only reward
Is ingratitude, and who does good, only to be sucked dry by leeches;
وآخرٌand another تزَحمُcrowds التفكيرَthought خلقتهُhis form
تَزاحمَthe jostling of الحسنِbeauty والثيرانand the bulls فيin الطُّرقِthe roads
And another, whose form crowds out thought,
As beauty and bulls jostle on the roads.
كمhow many ساعةٍan hour كنتُI used to إنif أمضيتهاI spent it طرباًin delight
لديكَwith you عدتُI returned جديدَnew الخلقِcreation فيin خلقىِmy character
How often, if I spent an hour in delight
With you, I would return newly created in my character.
ولنand will not أفرّطَI neglect فيin تجديدrenewing نَشوتَهاits rapture
كماjust as أضُّنI am protective بإيمانيof my faith ومُعتنقيِand my creed
And I will never neglect to renew its rapture,
Just as I jealously guard my faith and my creed.
