    كف لمارد عابس قتال

    The fog spread over the fields as though it were

    The hand of a grim, murderous giant;

    With his blow he erased the streams and hills,

    And the plantings too, without pause or question.

    It met from him not even the judgment of a man—

    A lawless man, prodigal in his relentless violence.

    He killed the light, as he had killed their colors,

    And overthrew a beauty never overthrown before.

    As though the world’s creation had been postponed,

    And the vast void lay before me.

    مثل اختفاء مدائن الأطفال

    The fog moved on to the city, and it vanished

    As children’s cities vanish;

    Or else its shadows were imagination’s shadow—

    When looked upon, they proved no shadows at all.

    Such is the fate, while fog encircles me

    With grief; I know no other fate as mine.

    As though I had been lodged within a dark cave,

    With no companion there except my wailing.

    As though life folded shut with my sigh

    And stumbled, exhausted, through my imagination.

    As though she had been buried alive just before weaning,

    Like me—or my hopes had killed themselves within her.

    As though consolation had been slain, blood-drenched

    With my blood and with the dear, precious illusion.

    As though despair possessed an everlasting kingdom,

    And as though its rise were my own rise.

    صور الجمال وروعة المثال

    As though I had been lost in a world that folded away

    The forms of beauty and the splendor of the ideal;

    Thus ugliness reigned there, unchallenged,

    And death reigned there, unconcerned.
