أتاني كتاب الصديق العزيز

عزيزاً كصاحبه المعلمِ

My dear friend's book came to me,

Precious, like its author, the teacher.

وليس التواضع إلا اعتزازاً

كما هبط اللحن للملهمِ

And humility is nothing but pride,

As the melody descended to the inspired one.

تنزه عن نزوةٍ للغرور

تَنُّزهَ باسمةِ الأنجم

He rose above a whim of conceit,

With the purity of the smiling one among the stars.

وأشرق اخلاصُه بالحبورِ

حُبوري الذي صاغه عن فمي

And his sincerity shone with joy—

My joy, which he fashioned from my lips.

فيا نعمةُ الحاج هذا وفائي

وفاؤك أحفظه في دمي

So, O Nehme al-Hajj, this is my loyalty:

Your loyalty I safeguard in my blood.

أبادلك الحب والعيدُ زاهٍ

ألسنا الى نوره ننتمى

I return your love, and the festival is radiant.

Do we not belong to its light?

وأقدر ما صُغتهُ للجمال

قرابينَ تسبح بالمغرم

And I value what you have fashioned for beauty:

Offerings that sing the praises of the enamored one,

ويُصغي إليها الآلهُ الطروب

فَيجبلها الروح في الآدمى

And the enraptured god listens to them,

So the spirit molds them within the human being.
