Why did the revolution blaze up—why?

Why did the revolution flare up, why

Was it an illusion, or did cowardice bar its passage?

Was I deluded or was it my cowardice running out?

إذا ما اطعت تسقي الأرض غيثا

إذا ما اطعت تسقي الأرض غيثا

فلا تقنع بسقياها الرذاذا

فلا تقنع بسقياها الرذاذا

If you are obeyed and water the earth with rain,

If you water the land with sufficient rain

Then do not settle for watering it with drizzle.

Do not be content with sprinkling it with drops

ولا تدع الجنادب حاكميها

ولا تدع الجنادب حاكميها

كأنك لم تجد فيها ملاذا

كأنك لم تجد فيها ملاذا

And do not let the grasshoppers be its rulers,

And do not let the locusts rule over it

As though you had found no refuge in it.

As if you did not find in it a refuge

أعيذك أن تعيد الظلم فينا

أعيذك أن تعيد الظلم فينا

ومثلك من أعز ومن أعاذا

ومثلك من أعز ومن أعاذا

I pray you be spared from restoring oppression among us,

I implore you not to return injustice upon us

And one like you has conferred honor and granted refuge.

You, like others, have been granted might and refuge

فكم وغد حيالك مشرئب

فكم وغد حيالك مشرئب

إلى الطاغوت في فكر تهاذى

إلى الطاغوت في فكر تهاذى

For many a scoundrel before you cranes his neck

For how many tomorrows laden

Toward the tyrant, with a mind that raves,

With thoughts of yielding to tyrants

يدس ليرجع الإفساد حتما

يدس ليرجع الإفساد حتما

أهذا من تحالفه أهذا

أهذا من تحالفه أهذا

Scheming to bring corruption back without fail.

Who sneakily endeavor that rot returns definitively

Is this the one you ally with—is this?

Is this who you have allied with, is this?

وما من ثورة نجحت جزافا

وما من ثورة نجحت جزافا

فإن النجح يتخذ اتخاذا

فإن النجح يتخذ اتخاذا

And no revolution has succeeded by chance,

No revolution has ever succeeded outright

For success is deliberately secured.

For success requires resolve and tact

فيا مثل البطولة دون من

فيا مثل البطولة دون من

ودون إساءة وسواه آذى

ودون إساءة وسواه آذى

So, O model of heroism, without boasting of favors,

So you who are the epitome of courage, flawless

And without wrongdoing, while another has caused harm,

And far above reproach and harming others

تبصّر واضرب الضربات بكرا

تبصّر واضرب الضربات بكرا

معاذ الله أن تنسى معاذا

معاذ الله أن تنسى معاذا

Be discerning, and strike your blows early;

Be prudent and strike blows early

God forbid that you should forget Mu'adh.

God forbid you forget your excellence

وطهر مصر من أرجاس جيل

وطهر مصر من أرجاس جيل

تعلق بالخساسة واستعاذا

تعلق بالخساسة واستعاذا

And cleanse Egypt of the filth of a generation

And cleanse Egypt of the vileness of a generation

That clung to baseness and sought refuge.

Clinging to depravity, pleading for refuge

وما أدري المشانق ساخرات

وما أدري المشانق ساخرات

أحق بهم أم النطع المحاذى

أحق بهم أم النطع المحاذى

And I do not know: are the mocking gallows

And I do not know if the gallows are mocking

More fitting for them, or the executioner's mat alongside?

More deserving of them or of decapitation

زعانف أرهقوا الأحرار دهرا

زعانف أرهقوا الأحرار دهرا

فلا ترحم وإن تك مستعاذا

فلا ترحم وإن تك مستعاذا

Riffraff who oppressed free people for an age—

These parasites who have burdened the free for ages

So show no mercy, even if your protection is sought;

Show them no mercy, even if you are entreated

وأقزام بآثام تعالوا

لماذا أنت راحمهم لماذا

And dwarfs who rose high through sins—

And you dwarves heavy with sins, come

Why are you merciful to them—why?
