O dead ones, and O you who were made immortal

In death, while the living are hostage to their ruin.

Shameful treachery did not attain its aim

Against you, but struck its own masters instead.

It is the tale of the blind beast, which did not know

Time's onslaught, with its claw and fang.

It thundered and growled, neither wary

Nor alert, and so prepared its cave for its own ruin.

The victims revive memories, and they

Are surely nobler than remembrance and its monuments,

Nobler than an ideal whose day we glorify,

And dearer than love among its devotees.

This day was hallowed by those who had been bereaved by it

Before, and who gathered at its shrine.

And nations gazed toward it with the tear of one bewildered,

Fearful, sensing their own affliction in its affliction.

For treachery still holds sway, striking

At justice, caring only for its own aims,

Swaggering and blustering about all that

Made peace a fable to the discerning.

    فالعدلُ غيرَ الظلم رغمَ خضابه

    So let the free beware, and let them stand together;

For justice differs from oppression, despite its coloring.

And people, however much deceived, will not submit

To oppression and tyranny on the day of its reckoning.
