وليسand is not الذيthe one who قدindeed عاشlived فيon الأرضِthe earth وافتناand displayed artistry
Is this the artist we hear as art,
Is this the artist we hear so artfully crafted,
and not the one who lived on earth and displayed artistry?
And not he who lived on earth and passed on?
وهلand does يحتوىcontain هذاthis الأثيرُthe ether علىacross المدىthe expanse

أغاريدَsongs لنwill never تَلقَىmeet كمبدعهاlike their creator الَّدفناburial
And does this ether hold, across the expanse,
Can this ether contain across the expanse
songs that, unlike their maker, will never meet burial?
Melodies like their composer now resting?

They drift over the ears, wandering free,
They wander about ears and imaginations
and sometimes meet the listening mind and the ear,
Now reaching minds that listen and ears that attend
كماjust as تُنصتُlisten الأشجارُthe trees وهيwhile they are سواهمٌlost in reverie
ومنهاand among them الذيthe one that ناجىwhispered intimately ومنهاand among them الذيthe one that غنَّىsang
as the trees listen, lost in reverie,
As trees attend in their stillness
among them, one whispered intimately, and another sang.
Some confiding and some singing praises
وليسand is not تراثُthe legacy العبقريةof genius نغمةًa note
ولكنbut صداهاits echo الخالقُwhich creates الغيبَthe unseen والكوناand the universe
And the legacy of genius is not a note,
A genius's legacy isn't a mere tune
but its echo, which creates the unseen and the universe.
But its echoes the unknown and the cosmos attuned
كأنَّas though بنىthe children of الانسانhumankind ليسواthey are not بعيشهمin their lives
بنىchildren of الأرضِthe earth أوor أنَّthat الحياةَlife بلاwithout مَعنىَmeaning
As though humankind's children, in their lives, were not
As if humankind in their lives
children of the earth, or as though life had no meaning,
Weren't creatures of earth or life meaningless
وأنَّand that وُجودَthe existence of الناسِpeople بعدafter مماتهمtheir death

and people's existence lay beyond their death:
As if people's existence after death
some of them live on, while most perish.
Meant some living on while most pass away

وماand not الكائنُthe being الباقيthat endures سوىother than الَمثلِthe ideal الأَسنىmost radiant
And these forms are nothing but experiments,
These apparitions are but trials
and the being that endures is only the most radiant ideal,
The eternal being ideals holding sway

setting nature's breaths rippling with enchantment,
Rustling nature's breaths seductively
and bestowing them on people as its loveliest melodies.
And granting people melodies sweet and tender

Whether we heard them aloud or in a whisper,
Whether heard aloud, whispers,
in silence or inwardly—for you were them as art.
Silence, or hints, you have mastered art
وماand not كانwas هذاthis السحرُmagic ايقاعthe rhythm of ساعةan hour
ولكنهbut it خُلدٌimmortality تمثلتهُI envisioned it عيناin tangible form
And this magic was not the rhythm of an hour,
This sorcery wasn't just a moment's rhythm
but immortality, which I envisioned in tangible form.
But eternity manifested before the eye
ترَدَّدَresounded فيthrough الأجواءِthe skies والكونُwhile the universe خاشعٌreverent
ولاand not ينتهىends التردادthe reverberation حِساًin perception ولاnor ظَنَّاin supposition
It resounded through the skies, while the universe stood reverent,
Echoing in the skies, the humbled cosmos
and the reverberation never ends, in perception or in thought.
Endless reverberations sensed or pondered

علىover عَبرةٍa tear أوor حاضرٌpresent حِسُّهits feeling مِناfrom us
And it stirred the scattered rainclouds: one passes
The scattered dissonance moved by the maestro
over a tear, or is present, its feeling drawn from us.
Crossing a moment or present in our senses

As though the sweet drizzle were the yearnings of companions
As if the sweet spray were longings of a beloved
who rose aloft and greeted us, having poured out the raincloud.
"Come, let us greet them," having poured the wine

كأناas though we شككناwe doubted بعدهاafter it أنthat نَرىwe would see أمناsafety
We all listened intently, wasting not a moment,
We listened together, losing not a moment
as though we doubted we would see safety afterward,
As if afterward we'd doubt seeing our loved one
كأناas though we رفضناwe rejected العيشَlife دقاتِthe beats of قَلبناour heart
وأناand that we اندمجناmerged فيinto الخلودimmortality وماand what جَّناit yielded (unclear spelling)
as though we rejected life as the beating of our hearts,
As if we'd refused living by our heartbeats
and that we merged into immortality and what it yielded.
And merged with eternity, intoxicated
وماand not نسمعُwe hear الأنغامَthe melodies عزفاًas playing مسلسلاًin succession

And we do not hear the melodies as notes played in sequence,
We don't hear melodies in seamless sequence
but they are dreams emanating from us.
But our dreams voiced collectively

Opposites united until they seemed
Opposites united as if they were
a family upon which art bestowed a share of its own stature.
Siblings graced by art with its affairs

As though gracious brotherhood lived in the shade of its spell;
As if the gracious fellowship shadowed
then, when it ended, we began to see injustice afterward.
After it ended, we saw only loss

And we had broken free from relentless prisons
As if released from dark prisons
in our bodies for a while; when it ended, we returned.
At times in our bodies, when done we returned

ووَّفيتand paid in full للكونِto the universe الِّرباthe interest الجَّمabundant والدَّيناand the debt
So, oh, if only I could become a wandering melody,
Oh to become a wandering melody
and pay the universe both lavish interest and the debt!
And repay the cosmos its due of loves and faith
وياand oh ليتنيif only I بادلتُexchanged عمريmy life بمقبلٍfor one to come

And oh, if only I could exchange my life for one to come—
Oh to trade my life for one forthcoming
for these wars of oppression grind us to pieces.
As oppressive wars grind us down
