منwho ذاthat one تركتyou left إذنthen فيamong الناسthe people يَقطعهاhe cuts it off
You who kiss the loathsome palm in pride,
Kissing the nameless palm in rapture
Whom, then, have you left among the people to cut it off?
Who then have you left among people to sever it?
هلis...? إرثُthe legacy of سعدٍSaad خُنوعُsubmission لاno مثيلَequal لهto it
لمنto the one who أذلَّhumiliated بلاداًa country كنتyou used to ترفعهاraise it high
Is Saad's legacy a submission without equal
Is the legacy of Saad submissiveness without equal?
To the one who humiliated a land you once raised high?
To one who has humiliated countries you held high
حفَّsurrounded اللصوصُthe thieves بهaround him منfrom كلِّevery ناحيةٍside
والدَّاعرونَand the debauched فمنso who ذاthat one اليومtoday يَنفعهاhelps her
Thieves surrounded him on every side,
Thieves have surrounded him from every side
And the debauched—who, then, will help her today?
And conspirators - so who will benefit him today?
أناI أدخرناكَwe kept you in reserve للجَّلىfor the great calamity فهلso, were...?
عقولناour minds أمor بدأتyou began اليومtoday تخدعُهاyou deceive them
We held you in reserve for the great calamity; were
We kept you for times of clarity, were we deluded
Our minds deceived, or have you begun today to deceive them?
Or have you only today begun to delude them?
والهفتيoh, my grief! فيin اغترابيmy exile اليومَtoday عنaway from وطنيmy homeland
وكلand all بأسىِmy strength دموعٌtears ليmine أوزعهاI scatter them
Oh, my grief in my exile today, far from my homeland!
My sighs in estrangement from my homeland today
And all my strength is tears that are mine to scatter.
And every tear of anguish I dispense

وأحرقتand burned كلَّevery غرسٍplanting وهوand it was مَرتَعهاtheir pasture
They fell in drops like a volcano's blaze, screaming,
Came pouring like the lava of volcanoes raging
And burned every planting, which was their pasture.
And scorched every plantation while it grazed
ولمand did not تَجدfind منamong بقاياthe remnants of الأَمسِyesterday صالحةًanything good
كأنمَّاas though الأمسyesterday أسيافswords تُقطعِّهاcut them apart
And found nothing good among yesterday's remnants,
And found nothing left over from yesterday wholesome
As though yesterday were swords that cut them apart.
As if yesterday swords that sever it
عَلامَfor what? مَدِحىmy praise وإِعزازِيand my esteem وتضحيتيand my sacrifice
ومصرُand Egypt تشقيsuffers وفيماand in what قلتَyou said مَصرعُهاher death
What were my praise, my esteem, and my sacrifice for,
Why my praise, honor and sacrifice
While Egypt suffers, and in what you said lies her death?
While Egypt suffers - and in what I said is its demise
هلwas...? خابَfailed ظَنِّيmy trust فَيمنin the one whom كنتI used to أَعبدهُI worship him
أمor الضمائرُconsciences كالثرواتِlike fortunes تَصنعهاyou manufacture them
Was my trust misplaced in the one I used to worship,
Did my hopes in whom I worshiped fail?
Or do you manufacture consciences as you do fortunes?
Or are consciences like fortunes - artificially made?
إنِّيindeed I أُطأطئُI bow راسيmy head عانياًsuffering خَجلاًshame
أنيbecause I ذكرتI recalled رزاياcalamities كنتَyou used to تَمنعهاyou prevent them
Indeed, I bow my head, suffering shame,
I bow my head suffering shame
Because I recalled calamities you once prevented.
That I mentioned my afflictions you forbade
منwho ينقذُsaves الشعبَthe people والويلاتُwhile woes تَنكههُwear them down
حينَwhen الزعاماُthe leaders تدعوهاyou call upon them تمنعهاthey withhold it
Who will save the people while woes wear them down,
Who will save the people while miseries soak them
When the leaders you call upon withhold relief?
When leaders call them but forbid them?
وحينماand when التاجُthe crown فيin الأفواهِmouths سخريةٌa mockery
وَمَنand who يَردَّturns back مآسيناour tragedies ويردعَهاand restrains them
And when the crown is a mockery in people's mouths,
And when the crown in mouths is but derision
And who will repel our tragedies and restrain them?
Who will repeal our tragedies and curb them?
هيهاتfar from it! لمnot يبقremain إلاّexcept الشعبُthe people منتفضاًrising up
متىwhenever المصائبُcalamities هزَّshook الشعبَthe people أَوجعهاthe most painful of them
Far from it! Only the people remain, rising up,
Alas, none remains but the people rising up
Whenever the most painful of calamities shakes the people.
Whenever disaster shook and pained the people terribly
