A greeting from one abroad, yet present,
Greetings of an expatriate present
Borne to poetry and the poet.
Bestowed upon poetry and the poet
تَشربتهاI drank it in منfrom حنانٍtenderness الوجودِexistence
تدورُit revolves معwith الفلكthe celestial sphere الدائرِrevolving
I drank it in from the tenderness of existence;
Imbibed it from the tenderness of existence
It circles with the revolving heavens.
Revolving with the orbiting sphere

Then delivers its message to beauty,
Thus completing its missive to beauty
And to art and captivating literature.
And to captivating art and literature

And I sent it upon the back of imagination,
I sent it atop the steed of imagination
Something peerless, of pure radiance,
Unique in pure splendor

Freed from the bounds of verse,
Freed from the confines of rhyme
And from the fetter of its outward expression,
And from the shackle of overt expression

To a homeland whose cares preoccupy me,
To a homeland whose concerns preoccupy me
And making it happy is ever in my thoughts.
And whose happiness is always on my mind

And neither Moses' revelation on Mount Sinai
Nor what was revealed to Moses on Mount Sinai
Nor the bewildered scholar's anguish
Nor the anguish of the perplexed scholar

منthan الفنart للمبدعِfor the creator القاهرِconquering
Is more wondrous in what either contains
Surpasses in beauty what it contained
Than art is to the conquering creator.
Of the art of the conquering creator

I shall await the echo of love and song,
I will await the return of passion and song
Charms for the intellect and the mind,
Charms to the heart and thoughts

Perhaps I may recite it finding solace
And publish them as a publisher's treasures:
And disseminate it, a publisher's masterwork

Even from visions of times gone by

And Egypt is nothing but the radiance of miracles,
For Egypt is but the miracles of yore
And the inspiration of great deeds for the revolutionary.
And the inspiration of the magnificent revolutionary

She deserves, despite the barrenness of the age,
Despite the barrenness of time
Loyalty from poetry and the poet.
Poetry and the poet owe it loyalty
