تَأتيyou practise الدَلالَcoquetry سَجِيَّةًby nature وَتَصَنُّعاًand by artifice
تَأتي الدَلالَ سَجِيَّةً وَتَصَنُّعاً
وَأَراكَand I see you فيin حالَيthe two forms of دَلالِكَyour coquetry مُبدِعاmasterful
وَأَراكَ في حالَي دَلالِكَ مُبدِعا
You practise coquetry by nature and by artifice,
Delusion comes to you pretentiously and affectedly
And I find you masterful in both forms of your coquetry.
Yet I see you in my state a creative inspirer
تِهbe haughty كَيفَhowever شِئتَyou wish فَماfor ... is not الجَمالُbeauty بِحاكِمٍa sovereign
تِه كَيفَ شِئتَ فَما الجَمالُ بِحاكِمٍ
حَتّىuntil يُطاعَit is obeyed عَلىdespite الدَلالِcoquetry وَيُسمَعاand is heeded
حَتّى يُطاعَ عَلى الدَلالِ وَيُسمَعا
Be haughty as you wish, for beauty is no sovereign
Roam however you wish for beauty has no ruler
Until it is obeyed and heeded, despite its coquetry.
To be obeyed about delusion or to be heard
لَكَit is your right أَنthat يُرَوِّعَكَfrighten you الوُشاةُthe tale-bearers مِنَaway from الهَوىlove
لَكَ أَن يُرَوِّعَكَ الوُشاةُ مِنَ الهَوى
وَعَلَيَّand it is my duty أَنto أَهوىI love الغَزالَthe gazelle مُرَوَّعاfrightened
وَعَلَيَّ أَن أَهوى الغَزالَ مُرَوَّعا
You may let tale-bearers frighten you away from love,
It is for you that the slanderers of love frighten you
And I must love the gazelle, frightened as it is.
And it is for me to love the frightened gazelle
قالواthey said لَقَدindeed سَمِعَlistened الغَزالُthe gazelle لِمَنto whoever وَشىtold tales
قالوا لَقَد سَمِعَ الغَزالُ لِمَن وَشى
وَأَقولُand I say ماnot سَمِعَlistened الغَزالُthe gazelle وَلاand did not وَعىunderstand
وَأَقولُ ما سَمِعَ الغَزالُ وَلا وَعى
They said, “The gazelle has indeed listened to the tale-bearer.”
They said the gazelle has heard the slanderer
And I say, “The gazelle neither listened nor understood.”
And I say the gazelle heard nothing and was unaware
أَناI مَنthe one who يُحِبُّكَloves you فيin نِفارِكَyour shying away مُؤنِساًa source of comfort
أَنا مَن يُحِبُّكَ في نِفارِكَ مُؤنِساً
وَيُحِبُّand loves تيهَكَyour haughtiness فيin نِفارِكَyour shying away مَطمَعاa source of hope
وَيُحِبُّ تيهَكَ في نِفارِكَ مَطمَعا
I am the one who loves you, finding comfort even in your flight,
I am the one who loves you in your aloofness, a companion
And loves your haughtiness, finding hope even in your flight.
And loves your wandering in your aloofness, hopeful
قَدَّمتُI placed بَينَbetween يَدَيَّmy two hands أَيّامَthe days of الهَوىlove
قَدَّمتُ بَينَ يَدَيَّ أَيّامَ الهَوى
وَجَعَلتُهاand I made them أَمَلاًa hope عَلَيكَon you مُضَيَّعاsquandered
وَجَعَلتُها أَمَلاً عَلَيكَ مُضَيَّعا
I set the days of love before me,
I put before me the days of love
And made them a hope squandered on you.
And made them a hope in you wasted
وَصَدَقتُand I was true فيin حُبّيmy love فَلَستُso I am not مُبالِياًconcerned
وَصَدَقتُ في حُبّي فَلَستُ مُبالِياً
أَنwhether أُمنَحَI am granted الدُنياthe world بِهِthrough it أَوor أُمنَعاI am denied it
أَن أُمنَحَ الدُنيا بِهِ أَو أُمنَعا
And I have been true in my love, so I do not care
And I was sincere in my love so I do not care
Whether through it I am granted the world or denied it.
If I am given the world through it or deprived
ياO مَنyou who جَرىflowed مِنfrom مُقلَتَيهِhis two eyes إِلىinto الهَوىlove
يا مَن جَرى مِن مُقلَتَيهِ إِلى الهَوى
صِرفاًunmixed وَدارَand coursed بِوَجنَتَيهِthrough his two cheeks مُشعشَعاdiluted
صِرفاً وَدارَ بِوَجنَتَيهِ مُشعشَعا
O you, from whose eyes wine flowed into love,
O you whose glance flowed to love inclining
Unmixed, and through whose cheeks it coursed, diluted:
And turned between your cheeks flashing
اللَهَfor God's sake فيconcerning كَبِدٍa liver سَقَيتَyou gave drink to بِأَربَعٍwith four
اللَهَ في كَبِدٍ سَقَيتَ بِأَربَعٍ
لَوif صَبَّحواthey gave a morning drink رَضوىRadwa بِهاwith them لَتَصَدَّعاit would surely split apart
لَو صَبَّحوا رَضوى بِها لَتَصَدَّعا
For God's sake, spare a liver you have plied with four [cups];
God, in a liver you watered with four
If they gave Radwa these to drink at dawn, it would surely split apart.
If they were to greet it in the morning, it would crack
