With praise of God, Lord of the worlds,

And praise of you, O Commander of the Faithful,

We met in your enemy what we met:

We found conquest and manifest victory.

They brandished harm, and you brandished war,

So you were mightier in assault and striking.

You seized their frontiers east and west,

And cleared the positions and fortresses.

Before the war, there was a war you waged,

Whose results appeared and became clear to us.

Through it you softened adversity, and it yielded,

    And left the Caesars bewildered.

You united kingdoms and peoples for us,

Though their policies had been of differing kinds.

So when their George sprang up in a rush,

He looked about, finding no helper for himself.

He saw what the road to Crete was like,

And what comes of mounting recklessness.

And how can you sleep, O Abd al-Hamid,

And be heedless of the blood of all peoples?

No, by God and the noble messengers,

And by your house, the finest house among mankind,

With your sword bent on vengeance, they could never,

All together, match even an unborn child of ours.

You saw that forbearance, when excessive, beguiled,

And emboldened their king until he grew audacious.

So his claims came to you in succession,

And your troops came to him to refute them,

With cavalry on the uplands and hillocks,

And fire in the fortresses and redoubts,

And a sword that neither softens nor shows favor,

Even when the fates shake it, seeking softness.

And an army of warriors descended from warriors,

Heroes in the past and in the future.

Out of nobility they humbled every tyrant,

And humbled themselves when fighting believers.

After their valor in every war,

And their blows across kingdoms—such blows—

Would children in a nation's guise venture,

And aspire to trample their lions' den?

Soldiers, a balm for wounds through all time,

Commanded by Edhem of far-reaching fame.

He ranged the uplands and lowlands of Thessaly,

Which had been an impregnable fortress for the foe.

O Reuters, do not slip poison in secretly,

And temper your frenzy, O Havas!

Ask Greece whether Larissa stood firm,

And whether the road to Athens was secured.

God forbid! No, and again no!

They are the illustrious, exalted sailors!

And their fleet at sea is nothing but

Rattles that neither go nor come.

How many armies of wishful thinking they sent,

That reached the Abode of Felicity in safety!

And traveled for only two days' time!

So welcome to the conquering warriors!

How often they passed the night in tumult and confusion,

And said: 'The funds are freely offered to George.'

And all the funds, both income and outlay,

Are debts you do not reckon as debts.

How many frontier strongholds they took without delay,

And came with their fleet from harbors,

And flew to the Bosporus in seconds!

So welcome to the swimming geese!

And in Constantinople they won a victory,

And battered St. Petersburg in a siege!

Alas for the Muslims and Christians,

And the Tsar and the other kings!

And you, Wilhelm, where can you flee,

When George and his army raid?

Till the seas grow too narrow for their ships,

And the land too narrow for them as they rush!

    Things that children laugh at,

And whose true nature the wise cannot fathom.

So ask Reuters and ask Havas about them,

For those two possess the certain news!

On Melouna's day, when we shouted and they shouted,

We remembered God in joy, and they wailed.

Wine passed among them from palm to palm,

And the comfort of faith passed among us.

    وَقُتناهُم مَنِيَّتَهُم وَقاتوا

    Upon the two mountains we spent the night, and so did they;

We fed them their death, and they fed us death.

    وَما البُسَلاءُ كَالمُستَبسِلينا

    We died steadfast, and they fought desperately;

The truly brave are not like those who strain for courage.

We made the earth swallow the fortresses whole.

They grow more defiant; we increase our bombardment,

With fire that blasts generations away,

And swallows their fire and those who discharge it.

Cannons that never return without their sustenance,

    Volcanoes raining down without exhaustion.

    فَكُنَّ المَوتَ أَو أَهدى عُيونا

    We emplaced them against the foe in every valley;

They were death—or yet more unerring of eye.

We made the earth beneath them blood,

And turned the smoke into their sky.

When they sought shelter from the fire,

Our swords sheltered hundreds of them.

    Many a venerable old warrior—

The mountains dismounted, but he would not dismount.

He wished to mount white-stockinged death,

To reach his forefathers who had died as martyrs.

He kept faith with his steed and bent over it,

While their rifles were trained upon him.

Their bullets struck, bloodying his hands,

And his forearms almost failed him.

He was accustomed to hitting and being hit.

He was urged to dismount, but gave no answer,

And as he died, he spoke a fitting word:

'Here let a man seek death!'

And he enriched valor with dignity—

A fierce lion among the lions of the Turks.

    He advanced toward fire—what fire!—

To outstrip his companion toward his Creator.

He charged and humbled those thousands,

And dislodged the ranks from their positions.

He waded through death to their lurking places,

And feared not the marksmen taking aim.

He raised God's call in the face of the foes,

Like a roaring lion in a valley's depths.

The legions and armies answered him,

And our banner's crescent wheeled rightward.

When they acknowledged that we were death,

And that we were the best to lead detachments,

Their host scattered, save for remnants

Strewn dead upon the mountain peaks.

The blessing of God, my Lord, and peace

Upon the fallen who remained at Pharsalo.

    فَأَدناهُم وَكانوا الفائِزينا

    They are the martyrs who hovered about God;

He drew them near, and they were triumphant.

They won the realm a conquest—what a conquest!—

And raised for the caliphate—what an edifice!

    تَقَبَّلَهُ وَكانَ بِهِ ضَنينا

    They brought their Lord a sacrifice of themselves;

He accepted it and held it dear.

    Peace, slope of Pharsalo, peace!

Be the finest resting place for those who stayed,

And cherish them, though their bones decay,

Around which the angels circle, hovering.

O Edhem, thus are lofty honors gained,

And gained with cutting swords and tall spears.

You have indeed whitened the realm's nights,

With a sword that puts the shining dawn to shame.

You wrested victory on the two mountains,

And were the lion, strutting and springing.

You charged, and the lambs surged in terror,

Whom the ignorant man supposes to be fighters.

    At Pharsal you performed wonders.

You spread out the army and read it like a book,

And counted it chapter by chapter,

While they were heedless of your book.

You stood firm, as steadfastness was expected of you.

Messages and couriers came to you,

And around you stood your trusted counselors.

    You commanded the armies, victorious.

    There the newspapers circulated, recounting,

And lightning flashes sent reports flying.

The kingdoms told the story, learning

From you the sciences and arts of war.

Sons of Osman, we have duly valued

Your great conquests, and given thanks.

We asked God for victory, and triumphed

Through you; God is the best of helpers.
