Whose radiant brow emerges from afar,

In a vision like a dream, bright and glad?

Her first gleams stir all existence,

As a newborn stirs its parents.

And from her ornaments a radiance envelops the worlds,

Lighting for us each jeweled tier

    Of waves, glittering just as

The necks of statues are adorned with necklaces.

She came to us from the water, quivering,

    Radiant, rising into existence.

And she ascends without any ladder—

So marvel at the Fashioner of this ascent!

And this radiant one, near, so near,

And this radiant one, far, so far,

And this radiant one that will not be seen,

And this radiant one, with everyone a witness,

And this massive one, light of step,

And this massive one that does not sway.

And marvel at the Fashioner of her effects

In every sea and in every desert,

And her dimming all that is rich in radiance,

And her dwarfing every lofty edifice.

    Of fire, yet her edges

Circle a ruby that will never perish.

    Of fire, yet her lights

Are divine, adorned for His servants.

She is the sun; she came to be as He willed her:

The death of the old, the life of the new.

She returns the waters to their bounds,

And wears away mountains of hard rock and iron.

And she rises bringing life or death

Upon the crops, standing and reaped.

And she moves for these people, however she moves,

With the best of promises and the worst of threats.

And she may reveal herself, when she comes,

Bringing bliss to the wretched and misery to the happy.

And she may turn away, when she departs,

And there is no assurance that she will return.

So why does sunset stir sorrow,

When sunrise was such a festival for us?

So too is man at the hour of his birth,

And at the hour when relentless death calls.

And nothing unfolds or comes to pass

But what is right, as the One who wills decreed.
