Do you know how gazelles take fright?

    رُبَّما رَوَّعَها مُرُّ الصَبا

    They were created carefree and delicate;

Sometimes the passing east breeze startles them.

Believes the words and lends weight to suspicions.

My hope in my charmer has not proved false.

And darkness lowering its veils over us,

In the night's shelter, under its protection,

We speak of dawn, wishing it would not draw near.

He guarded beauty, and I guarded propriety.

How can I complain that it has been stolen?

Or, if he sees fit, destroys it and accepts the loss.

And the hills wished they could bear it aloft.

And glances—one manifestation of their magic:

The eyelid has gathered arrows and sword-edges.

What has my heart to do with love after youth?

To Labīd at eighty, he would feel youthful longing.

O soul, you strive in vain.

Have you seen life as anything but play?

Try the world; it will seem paltry to you. How

Paltry the world is to one who has tried it!

You gained what you gained of its outward show,

And were granted immortality in remembrance and renown.
