وَرِثاءُand lamenting الأَبِthe father دَينٌa debt أَيُّwhat a دَينdebt
They asked me why I did not lament my father,
They asked me why I did not eulogize my father
And lamenting one's father is a debt—what a debt!
Is eulogizing one's father a duty? What duty?
أَيُّهاO اللُوّامُreproachers ماhow أَظلَمَكُمunjust you are
أَينَwhere ليfor me العَقلُthe mind الَّذيthat يُسعِدُhelps أَينwhere
O you reproachers, how unjust you are!
O blamers, how unjust you are to me
Where is the mind that would help me—where?
Where is the rationale that brings happiness? Where?
ياO أَبيmy father ماnot أَنتَyou فيin ذاthis أَوَّلٌthe first

كُلُّevery نَفسٍsoul لِلمَناياto death فَرضُan obligation عَينindividual
O father, you are not the first in this;
O father, you were not the first
Every soul is death's inescapable due.
Every soul has death as an obligatory duty
هَلَكَتperished قَبلَكَbefore you ناسٌpeople وَقُرىand villages

وَنَعىand announced the death of الناعونَthe death-announcers خَيرَthe best of الثِقَلَينhumankind and jinn
People and villages perished before you,
People and villages perished before you
And mourners announced the death of the best of humans and jinn.
And the bier announced the best of the two burdens

آخِذٌa taker يَأخُذُهُseizes him بِالأَصغَرَينby the heart and tongue
A mortal's end, however long his span,
A person's goal, though the journey be long
Is a taker who seizes him by heart and tongue,
Is seized by the most trivial of matters
وَطَبيبٌand a physician يَتَوَلّىturns away عاجِزاًpowerless

And a physician turning away, powerless,
A doctor who busies himself with the incurable
Shaking out Hunayn's two boots—his medicine of no avail.
Exhaling from his healing a hidden sigh
إِنَّindeed لِلمَوتِfor death يَداًa hand إِنif ضَرَبَتit strikes

أَوشَكَتwould almost تَصدَعُsplit apart شَملَthe union of الفَرقَدَينthe two Farqad stars
Death indeed has a hand that, if it strikes,
Indeed death's blow, if it strikes
Could almost tear the two Farqad stars apart.
Would nearly shatter kinship's bond

It pierces the sky to fall upon its eagles,
It penetrates the air on its heels
And meets the lion between the two mountains.
And meets the lion between two mountains

And brings the fledgling down from its thicket,
And drops the chick from its nest
And reaches the parrot at two hundred years.
And gets the parrot at two hundred
أَناI مَنthe one who ماتَdied وَمَنand the one who ماتَdied أَناI
لَقِيَmet المَوتَdeath كِلاناboth of us مَرَّتَينtwice
I am the one who died, and the one who died is I;
I am the one who died and the one who died is me
Both of us have met death twice.
We both met death twice
نَحنُwe كُنّاwe were مُهجَةًa soul فيin بَدَنٍa body
ثُمَّthen صِرناwe became مُهجَةًa soul فيin بَدَنَينtwo bodies
We were one soul within one body,
We were a fetus in one body
Then became one soul within two bodies;
Then we became a fetus in two bodies
ثُمَّthen عُدناwe returned مُهجَةًa soul فيin بَدَنٍa body
ثُمَّthen نُلقىwe are laid جُثَّةًa corpse فيin كَفَنَينtwo shrouds
Then returned to one soul within one body,
Then we returned a fetus in one body
Then we shall be laid as one corpse in two shrouds.
Then we will be a corpse in two shrouds
ثُمَّthen نَحياwe live فيin عَلِيٍّAli بَعدَناafter us

Then we live on in Ali after we are gone,
Then we will live through Ali after us
And through him we are raised in the first of two resurrections.
And through him we will be resurrected the first of the two resurrections
اِنظُرِlook at الكَونَthe universe وَقُلand say فيin وَصفِهِits description
كُلُّall هَذاthis أَصلُهُits origin مِنfrom أَبَوَينtwo parents
Look at the universe, and say in describing it:
Look at the universe and describe it
All this has its origin in two parents.
All this originated from two parents
فَإِذاso if ماemphatic particle قيلَit is said ماwhat أَصلُهُماtheir origin
قُلsay هُماthey both are الرَحمَةُmercy فيin مَرحَمَتَينtwo mercies
And if it is asked, 'What is their origin?'
So if it is asked what their origin is
Say: they are mercy in two embodiments of compassion.
Say they are mercy in two wombs
فَقَداthey both lost الجَنَّةَparadise فيin إيجادِناbringing us into being
وَنَعِمناand we lived in bliss مِنهُماthrough them both فيin جَنَّتَينtwo paradises
They lost paradise in bringing us into being,
They lost Heaven by creating us
And through them we lived in bliss in two paradises.
And we enjoyed it in two gardens
وَهُماand they both are العُذرُindulgence إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle أُغضِباthey both are angered

And they are indulgence whenever they are angered,
And they are the excuse when they get angry
And they are forgiveness for us, seeking to please us.
And they are the ones who forgive us appeased

Would that I knew: what living being has not lived by
I wish I knew which living being did not
What they both lived by in the beginning?
Worship what we worshipped in the beginning

وَأَماتَand caused to die الرُسلَthe messengers إِلّاexcept الوالِدَينthe two parents
God has set us where they stand,
And God stopped us where they stopped
And caused the messengers to die, save the two parents.
And caused the messengers to die except the two parents
ماnot أَبيmy father إِلّاbut أَخٌa brother فارَقتُهُI parted from him

My father is but a brother from whom I parted;
My father is but a brother I parted from
His love is truth; other people's love is falsehood.
His affection is honesty and people's affection is disloyalty
طالَماhow often قُمناwe rose إِلىto مائِدَةٍa table

كانَتِwas الكِسرَةُthe piece of bread فيهاon it كِسرَتَينtwo pieces of bread
How often we went to a table
We have long stood up to a table
Where one piece of bread became two pieces;
On which the piece of bread was split in two
وَشَرِبناand we drank مِنfrom إِناءٍa vessel واحِدٍone

وَغَسَلناand we washed بَعدَafter ذاthat فيهِin it اليَدَينthe two hands
And we drank from a single vessel,
And we drank from one cup
And after that washed our hands in it.
And after that we washed our hands twice in it
وَتَمَشَّيناand we walked يَديmy hand فيin يَدِهِhis hand
مَنwhoever رَآناsaw us قالَsaid عَنّاof us أَخَوَينtwo brothers
And we walked, my hand in his;
And we walked hand in hand
Whoever saw us spoke of us as two brothers.
Whoever saw us said they are two brothers

Time cast a glance upon us,
Fate looked upon us with one look
Dealing equal harm, so that one glance became two.
Making mischief equal, so it was two looks

لاnot تَذوقُtastes النَفسُthe soul مِنهاfrom it مَرَّتَينtwice
O father, death is a bitter cup
O father, and death is a bitter cup
From which no soul tastes twice.
The soul does not taste it twice
كَيفَhow كانَتwas ساعَةٌan hour قَضَّيتَهاyou spent it

What was the hour you endured like?
How was the hour you spent
Everything before it or after it is easy.
When everything before or after was insignificant

Did you drink death in it in one draught,
Did you drink death in it one draught
Or did you drink death in it in two draughts?
Or did you drink death in it two draughts

Do not fear grief or weeping after you are gone;
Do not fear, after you, sorrow or crying
Today your eye and mine have frozen.
My eye and your eye froze today

You have taught me to leave sorrow behind:
You taught me to leave grief behind
All beauty whose end is death is ugliness.
All beauty, its end is death, disgrace

Would that I knew: can we meet
I wonder, will we meet again
Once again, or is this parting for as long as night and day endure?
Or is this the separation of two intimates

And when I die and am laid in the earth,
And when I die and am buried
Shall we be laid in one grave, or two?
Will I be put in one grave or two
