The youth of intellect and lofty melody
The youth of wisdom and sublime melody
Has passed away, but his merits endure.
Has passed, though his virtues remain

وَلاand no مَلِكٌking لَمnot تَزِنadorned نادِيَهhis gathering
So there was no commoner it did not comfort,
No marketplace that was not his companion
Nor king whose gathering it did not grace.
No king whose assembly did not weigh his chant

And no town was without its fragrance,
No town was devoid of his goodness
And no region lacked word of it.
No region devoid of his mention

Whenever he sang to humankind, he almost
When he sang, he almost made
Made rhyme itself speak with a rhyme.
The cosmos speak in rhyme

Some of the worthless are confused
When it holds his precious melodies.

His strings rule the soul
Upon the oud, speaking and recounting;
Speaking on the oud mimicingly

And how many signs in his songs
Each is the sun, with no second.
They are the sun, unmatched

When connoisseurs call it out to one another,
When the gnostics whisper them
Say: lightning and thunder from a morning raincloud.
Say: The lightning and thunder are from the clouds

But if they whisper it after sounding it aloud,
And if they whisper after loudness
Then it is the soft clink of jewels upon a beauty.
The swaying of adornments upon the singer

Verdi indeed grew gray and passed beyond old age,
Indeed, my hair has turned white and youthfulness has faded
Yet Aida's youth remains radiant.
Yet its celebration remains lively

It represents Egypt in this time
As it was in ages gone by.
As it was in eras past

And through her we recall those nights,
And we recall those nights through it
And we seek those night-wandering visions.
And chant those visions that flowed

And we weep for our vanished glory,
And weep over our lost glory
And we mourn our bygone days.

فَقَدناwe have lost بِمَفقودِكُمin the one you lost شاعِراًa poet
يَقِلُّfalls short الزَمانُtime لَهُfor him راوِيَهas a narrator
In the one you lost, we have lost a poet
For in your loss, we lost a poet
For whom time falls short as a narrator.
Whose equal time will scarcely find
