من لا يسالم في الرجال كريما
The worst calamity is to have as leader
The worst of calamities is for one to be a leader
one who makes no peace with any noble man.
Who does not greet the noble men with peace
عابوكthey faulted you إذwhen وجدواthey found صنيعكyour work بارعاmasterful
عابوك إذ وجدوا صنيعك بارعا
ورأواand they saw سبيلكyour path فيin الحياةlife قويماupright
ورأوا سبيلك في الحياة قويما
They faulted you when they found your work masterful,
They blamed you when they found your work excellent
and saw your path through life was upright.
And saw your path in life upright
أينwhere الحلومgood sense ولاand no حلومgood sense لمعشرfor a people
أين الحلوم ولا حلوم لمعشر
رامواthey sought المحالthe impossible وصدقواand they believed الموهوماthe unreal
راموا المحال وصدقوا الموهوما
Where is good sense? There is none among a people
Where is the forbearance when there is no forbearance for the group
who sought the impossible and believed in the unreal.
Who sought the impossible and believed the delusory
إنif يهذرواthey babble فلقدthen indeed تركتyou left قلوبهمtheir hearts
إن يهذروا فلقد تركت قلوبهم
تشكوlamenting صوادعshattering blows جمةmany وكلوماand wounds
تشكو صوادع جمة وكلوما
If they babble, then you have indeed left their hearts
If they babble, indeed you have left their hearts
lamenting many shattering blows and wounds.
Complaining of hard, unfeeling hearts
أوor يطلبواthey seek إيلامcausing pain to كلevery مهذبrefined person
أو يطلبوا إيلام كل مهذب
فلقدthen indeed أذقتهمyou made them taste العذابthe torment أليماpainful
فلقد أذقتهم العذاب أليما
Or if they seek to hurt every refined man,
Or if they demand the pain of every refined person
then you have indeed made them taste painful torment.
Indeed, you have made them taste excruciating torment
اللهGod فيregarding مهجاتهمtheir souls وقلوبهمand their hearts
الله في مهجاتهم وقلوبهم
فلقدfor indeed عهدتكI have known you بالنفوسtoward souls رحيماmerciful
فلقد عهدتك بالنفوس رحيما
For God's sake, spare their souls and their hearts;
God is in their minds and hearts
for I have known you to be merciful toward souls.
Indeed, you have made me know souls as merciful
كثرتhave multiplied سهامarrows الرائشينthe fletchers وإنماand yet
كثرت سهام الرائشين وإنما
أرسلتyou loosed سهمكyour arrow نافذاpiercing مسموماpoisoned
أرسلت سهمك نافذا مسموما
The fletchers' arrows have multiplied, yet
Numerous are the arrows of the detractors, yet
you loosed your arrow, piercing and poisoned.
You have sent your arrow piercing and poisonous
هوit ماas علمتyou know فلاso do not تُقمgive للوائهمto their banner
هو ما علمت فلا تُقم للوائهم
وزناweight ولوand even if ملأواthey fill البلادthe land هزيماthunder
وزنا ولو ملأوا البلاد هزيما
It is as you know; do not give their banner
This is what you knew, so do not stand up for their banners
any weight, even if they fill the land with thunder.
And weigh them, even if they filled the lands with defeat
زعمواthey deemed الحياةlife نفيسهاits precious part وخسيسهاand its worthless part
زعموا الحياة نفيسها وخسيسها
قولاspeech يطيرthat flies معwith الهباءthe dust عقيماbarren
قولا يطير مع الهباء عقيما
They deemed life—its precious and its worthless alike—
They claimed that life itself was precious and vile
barren speech that flies away with the dust.
Words that fly away with the useless chaff
إنif يغضبواthey grow angry فلقدthen indeed رضيتI am content وحسبهمand enough for them
إن يغضبوا فلقد رضيت وحسبهم
أنto يقذفواthey hurl بيme فيinto الجحيمHell ذميماreviled
أن يقذفوا بي في الجحيم ذميما
If they grow angry, I am content; and it is enough for them
If they get angry, indeed you were pleased, and it is enough for them
to hurl me into Hell, reviled.
That they throw me into the foul hell
إنif ينقمواthey take offense خلقواthey create الشقاءوmisery, and إنif رضواthey are pleased
إن ينقموا خلقوا الشقاءو إن رضوا
جعلواthey make حياةthe life of البائسينthe wretched نعيماbliss
جعلوا حياة البائسين نعيما
If they take offense, they create misery; and if they are pleased,
If they resent, they created misery, and if they were pleased
they make the lives of the wretched bliss.
They made the lives of the wretches blissful
فتحواthey opened لحزبهمto their party الجنانParadise's gardens وأَعَتدواand they prepared
فتحوا لحزبهم الجنان وأَعَتدوا
سبحانهمglory be to them للكافرينfor the unbelievers جحيماa Hell
سبحانهم للكافرين جحيما
They opened Paradise's gardens to their party and prepared—
They opened their Gardens for their party and prepared
glory be to them!—a Hell for the unbelievers.
Glory be to them! A hellfire for the unbelievers
