a city to which people journey,

and students and sages make pilgrimage.

It lived an age upon the sea, a port of greatness,

and the lighthouse by which guidance is found.

    Secure through armies and books,

at the height to which greatness reaches.

It sends light to the lands, and there travel

within its radiance minds and men of understanding.

The ships upon the sea display the might

of kingship; the sea is power and wealth.

The subjects dwell in prosperity, and Ptolemy

has an exalted kingdom upon the earth.

Then God decreed that this kingdom should be squandered

by a woman for whom fidelity was difficult.

    تَمهيداً وَتَمهيدُهُ بِأُنثى بَلاءُ

    Rome made her a stepping-stone to evil;

paving its way through a woman is calamity.

Corruption reached its utmost in this land,

    and temptation surpassed the devils.

    يا لَرَبّي مِمّا تَجُرُّ النِساءُ

    A woman ruined mankind's Caesar;

O my Lord, what women bring about!

She bewitched in him Rome's hoped-for refuge,

and the sword by which it was defended,

the conqueror of opponents and armies, however

fierce the terror of battle and the encounter grew.

Then there came to her one whom no

woman could possess, no slender beauty enslave:

hero of the two realms, guardian of

Rome's sanctuary, whom passions could not lead.

He took the kingdom while she, in the serpent's grip,

was blind to sovereignty and love.

It stole her life: marvel at a speckled woman

from whom a speckled snake relieved mankind.

She achieved no success through deception, but

they deceived her by calling her beautiful.

    صَغُرَت نَفسُها وَقَلَّ الفِداءُ

    She killed herself, thinking it a sacrifice;

her soul was small, and slight the sacrifice.

Ask Cleopatra of intrigues: why did not

her cunning turn her from allegiance to Rome?

Through Rome she gained support, and through Rome

    she suffers; such are enemies.

Rome possesses the kingdom which so often

received her secret counsel and allegiance.

A right hand governed Egypt, but toward the Egyptian

alone, unlike all others, it was a left hand.

    وَعَقيمٌ مِن أَهلِ مِصرَ الدُعاءُ

    The earth makes Caesar hear when it calls;

the call from Egypt's people is fruitless.

He grants mankind its rights, but if

Egypt calls him, his ear is deaf.

    Endure affliction, Egypt—but how can

you, when enduring affliction is itself affliction?

    لَيسَ مِنهُ إِلى سِواهُ النَجاءُ

    This is the one to whom you used to turn for refuge;

there is no escaping him by turning to another.

Lord, You filled Your servants with longing in ages

with neither guiding books nor prophets.

In longing they followed many paths,

    which radiant truth drew together.

If they called a mighty one a god,

his powers ultimately lead to You.

If they favored a beautiful one with sanctification,

beauty itself is a gift from You.

    If they fashioned radiant statues,

their symbols and allusions point to You.

If they reckoned the stars as lords,

from You come radiance and splendor.

If they deified plants, among the traces of

Your bounty were their beauty and growth.

If they turned toward mountains in prostration,

lofty majesty was what they sought.

If seas are worshipped along with fish,

    and storm winds and tempests,

and beasts of sky and earth, and wombs,

    and mothers and fathers:

all masculine things are slaves to Your exaltedness,

bowed low; all feminine things are bondmaids.

    شَفَّ عَنهُ الحِجابُ فَهوَ ضِياءُ

    A mystery joined creation and virtue;

the veil became transparent before it: it is light.

Egypt bowed through time before Isis

of bounty, she of the gracious hand.

    أَو تَلِ البَحرَ فَالرِياحُ رُخاءُ

    If she governs the land, the country is gold;

if she governs the sea, the winds are gentle.

    أَو تَلِ الأُفقَ فَهيَ فيهِ ذُكاءُ

    If she governs the soul, she is in every limb;

if she governs the horizon, she is its sun.

It was said: 'Isis, mistress of the universe, were it not

for Your oneness, things would not exist.

You took lights for veils; no

earth beheld You, nor heaven saw You.

You are what existence reveals and what

it conceals; You are revealing and concealment.

Apis and beloved Osiris are Yours,

and his two sons: all are Your devotees.

Your person was represented to the eyes; representation

brings near the one who cannot be brought near.

The Greeks claimed You after Egypt,

and the ancients followed them in loving You.'

If asked what Egypt's glories are,

one says: among them is her radiant Isis.

Lord, these are our minds in their youth,

struck by fear and captivated by hope.

We loved You before the messengers came,

and our limbs arose in love of You.

We journeyed on through night; but for ignorance's darkness,

guidance toward You would not have missed us.

We adopted diverse names, but when

Moses came, the names came finally to You.

    وَاِطمَأَنَّت إِلى العَصا السُعَداءُ

    He confuted us in that age, matching magic with magic;

the blessed found reassurance in the staff.

God wishes reason to be honored,

and opinions not to be despised.

    وَعِندَ الكِرامِ يُرجى الوَفاءُ

    Pharaoh thought Moses would be faithful to him;

among the noble, faithfulness is expected.

He did not reckon, when he raised him,

that the recompense would be its opposite.

God willed that he should be unfilial; for to God

alone, not to another, prophets keep faith.

Egypt belongs to Moses by affiliation, and Moses

belongs to Egypt, if kinship and belonging count.

Through him her glory is upheld whenever

the banner is waved for the lord who spoke with God.

If she shunned him in an hour of doubt,

estrangement is the great man's portion from her.

A habit of the land through which people suffer,

    and homes and children suffer.

    وَعَظيمٌ أَن يُنبَذَ العُظَماءُ

    A grave thing, that a great man is not protected;

a grievous thing, that the great are rejected.

Gentleness was born on the day Jesus was born,

    and nobility, guidance, and modesty.

The universe rejoiced in the newborn, and

earth's regions shone with his radiance.

The sign of Christ spread as

light spreads through existence from the dawn.

    فَالثَرى مائِجٌ بَهاً وَضّاءُ

    It fills the earth and worlds with light;

the earth surges with radiant beauty.

    لا حُسامٌ لا غَزوَةٌ لا دِماءُ

    No threat, no assault, no vengeance;

no sword, no invasion, no blood.

An angel dwelt beside the dust, and when

he tired, heaven took the place of earth.

Elders obeyed him in matters of God,

    reverent, submissive, weak before him.

People and kings submitted to what

they ordained, as did minds and men of reason.

They have a station in every land,

and an anchorage upon every shore.

They entered Thebes, and were warmly welcomed

    by wise men of Thebes.

They understood the mystery when they tasted it; it is easy

for men of understanding to attain truths.

Then the sacred temple was a monastery,

and the monastery was grace and splendor.

Then Thebes and Memphis belonged to Jesus,

and the Nile of abundance and the plains.

    وَمُلوكُ الحَقيقَةِ الأَنبِياءُ

    The earth and open space belong only to my Lord;

the kings of truth are the prophets.

Their subjects give them love unalloyed,

and all affection and allegiance are theirs.

    Only those deny religions

who are made wretched by what they deny.

The empire of the Caesars grew old; empires

are like people: their malady is extinction.

    Neither lands nor the wealth

of provinces avail them when the summons comes.

Rome suffered what Athens had suffered before,

and impregnable Thebes was subjected to it.

    God's law for kingdoms, before

    and after: no blessing endures.

After Caesar, East and West darkened,

    and darkness enveloped mankind.

    يَفتُكُ الجَهلُ فيهِ وَالجُهَلاءُ

    Humanity persisted in its error;

ignorance and the ignorant ravaged it.

In error it conceived God as a person,

or a meteor, or an unyielding rock.

Love of idols took possession of souls

until all desires came to it.

God willed that they should be purified by the sword,

and that blood should wash away sins.

some of their limbs are sacrificed for others.

God did not bear His servants enmity, but

    the foolish suffered through foolishness.

When sins grow great and terrible,

    justice requires a terrible recompense.

Light shone throughout the worlds when

    tidings announced Ahmad to them:

the orphan, the unlettered man, the mortal

to whom knowledge and names were revealed.

If God's power takes a weak man under its care,

the strong grow weary contending with him.

Noblest of the messengers, his sign was speech

made clear, and his people were eloquent.

He had scarcely spoken those radiant marvels

when the eloquent outran all others to him.

Minds came to him with their reins submissive,

and helpers and supporters answered the call.

    لَم يُؤَلِّف شَتاتُهُنّ لِواءُ

    He came to people whose inner lives were in disorder;

no banner had united their scattered parts.

God's sanctuary was violated, and God's law,

truth, and right were left behind.

    descending to earth and ascending.

A light seems to fill the horizon in his wings,

a light stolen from the stars and Orion.

Those are the verses of the Furqan, sent by God

as light by which He guides whom He wills.

They superseded the way of prophets and messengers,

    as light supersedes light.

Radiant, noble men protected them, stern

toward the enemy, compassionate among themselves.
