شمس النهار وأختها
فيon الأرضthe earth منهاfrom her مستظلةsheltering in shade
في الأرض منها مستظلة
The sun of day, and her sister
The sun of daytime and her sister
On earth, sheltering from her in shade;
One on earth seeking shade
هذىthis one لدىat أفقa horizon وذىand this one
هذى لدى أفق وذى
منfrom أفقthe horizon of عصمتهاher chastity مطلةlooking out
من أفق عصمتها مطلة
This one is at a horizon, and the other
This one on the horizon and that
Looks out from the horizon of her chastity.
Looking out from her protected horizon
رامsought الجهولthe ignorant fool نزولهاher descent
رام الجهول نزولها
والجهلand ignorance يركبcommits ألفa thousand زَلةmisstep
والجهل يركب ألف زَلة
The ignorant fool sought her descent,
The ignorant tried to make her descend
And ignorance commits a thousand missteps.
And ignorance trips into a thousand errors
فترفعتso she kept aloof عنهfrom him ولمand did not
فترفعت عنه ولم
تُنزلshe lowers عليهupon him سوىexcept المظلةthe parasol
تُنزل عليه سوى المظلة
So she held herself above him, and did not
Yet she rose above him and did not
Lower upon him anything but the parasol.
