قضى أريحيّ القوم والقوم من همو
فكلso every لبيبdiscerning person بينbetween جنبيهhis two sides مأتمa mourning assembly
فكل لبيب بين جنبيه مأتم
The people's generous-hearted man has died—and what a people they are!
The tribe's chieftain passed away, and the people grieved for him
So every discerning man bears a mourning assembly within his breast.
Thus every wise man has a funeral in his heart

Tomorrow, and tomorrow we shall meet, while life embraces us
We returned at evening—yet how many a dead man never rises!
And we wandered, and how many dead will not rise

Did the righteous, then, court his friendship by night,
Did the righteous speak their sorrows in the night?
So that morning found him among them, content and in bliss?
And in the morning find joy and contentment

Know that the life is but a day and a night
Which disclose what the unseen conceals and keeps secret.
That reveal what is hidden and concealed

Since time began, people's tears have never ceased:
Never in this existence did people learn a lesson
When the weeper laughs, the smiling one weeps.
When the weeping laughs, the smiling cries

Widows weep, or families beat their cheeks.
Widows crying, families slapping their faces

ونكّر للعرفان والعلم معلم
A familiar home of benevolence and generosity has changed,
The place of kindness and generosity has changed
And a landmark of understanding and learning has become unrecognizable.
And gratitude and knowledge have lost their teacher

ولكن رزء الناس بالحرّ مؤلم
Though you have died, every human must die;
If man dies, he is bound to die
But people's loss of a noble man is grievous.
But people's sadness for the free is painful

No one lives unknown in obscurity
Nor has an honored man whose beacon towers high truly died.
And no one dies with raised minaret in glory

When inescapable fate gives a man drink.
When fate gives man the destined bitter cup

Indeed, a man in life is what he strives for;
In his life the youth works not for what he desires
And after he is gone, a man is what he sends ahead.
And after him, he leaves no good deeds

As for what rests with people, people are tongues;
What people had, people's tongues tell the tale
And what rests with God—God is more generous.
And what was God's, God grants the reward

Has any of you replaced Hatim?

Take the good from him and act as he did
For goodness is indeed adornment and gain in both abodes.
For in both abodes, good is beauty and profit

Poetry is but the echo of emotion and thought
So whoever is betrayed by his feeling is betrayed by his mouth.
He whose conscience betrays his mind, his mouth also betrays
