The lion looked at a fat calf,

Which was nearby, in a safe field.

    وَكَذا الأَنفُسُ يُصيبُها النَفيس

    Then the chief's soul craved some of its flesh;

And so precious things take hold of souls.

He said to the fox, 'O master of cunning:

    Your beloved head—or that gazelle!'

The fox then wished him good fortune and long life,

And set out at once on the momentous task.

And he came to the field when darkness had fallen,

Then saw the calf and offered it a greeting,

Saying, 'O my lord the minister,

You are a man of pardon and abundant kindness.

Envy drove the wolf to seek my death,

So he denounced me before our lord the lion.

So I sought refuge in your exalted standing,

Which has always been a fine intercessor among us.'

Then the deluded calf wept at the villain's plight,

And drew near, asking for an explanation of the story.

The fox said, 'Do you not know, O sweet-natured one,

That our lord, the Father of Elephants, has died?

So the sovereign saw in the large head

A seat of wisdom and abundant skill.

And deemed you the best to be appointed minister,

And a pillar in reserve for the affairs of the realm.

And indeed, among your forefathers they counted

The likes of Apis and the idol of the Jews.

So they set up a throne for Your Excellency,

At the right hand of the exalted, eminent king.

And the birds and beasts made ready for that,

    Awaiting the exalted lord there.

So when you shoulder the burdens of affairs,

And fellowship and joy have come to you,

Exonerate me before the sovereign of the age,

And seek from him pardon and protection for me.

And let it suffice you that I am an obedient servant:

I serve my benefactor to the utmost of my ability.'

Then the calf sharpened its horns and said,

'From today you are under my protection; you shall not be harmed.

    أَنا لا يَشقى لَدَيهِ بي رَفيق

    So go and show me the way to the lion;

As for me, no companion shall suffer on my account before him.'

So the two friends went at once into the wilderness—

One to death, and the other to life.

And there the lion swallowed the minister,

And rewarded the fox with a little of him.

So he turned back, laughing at the folly of calves,

And raced in the arena of boasting, saying:

    فَفَداهُ كُلُّ ذي رَأسٍ كَبير

    'The fox escaped unharmed with his small head;

So everyone with a large head ransomed him.'
