The hand of the generous Alawi king

has stirred science's brother, literature, on science's behalf.

The tongue of Egypt, the Quiver, gives thanks to that hand,

and it is none other than the tongue of the Arabs.

Egypt has fulfilled her need, O Ali,

and she has gained her desire, as have her sons.

And I congratulated the genius on the honors,

and congratulated the honors on the genius.

Ali, the country has indeed named you

'Healer of Wounds'—and what a fine title!

Your weapon is among the instruments of life,

yet every weapon is an instrument of destruction.

And your speech is an anesthetic, yet it is

a gentle east breeze in the eyelids of the nerves.

Fingertips like the fingers of the Messiah,

healers of wounds, erasers of scars.

Your two hands treat life's misery:

for one hand heals, and one hand gives.

And blood is held fast in your two palms,

yet gold will not rest upon them.

As though you were a death appointed for Death,

so it never saw your face without fleeing.
