    وَغَدَت عَواطِلٌ بَعدَكَ الأَفراحُ

    The carpet was rolled up, and the goblets ran dry;

and joys, after you, were left without adornment.

And a gathering in the Levant dispersed, and an evening company

in Egypt, whose full-throated nightingale you were.

And art's tallest spreading tree collapsed,

to whose shade people went morning and evening.

By God, I do not know—you being its peerless one—

whether to weep for it or lament you.

Ishaq has died: no morning draught; and Ma'bad

has perished: no happiness comes with the evening draught.

The king of song was removed from his throne

by an allotted fate that dislodges steadfast mountains.

In the dust above Beni Suef lies a peerless jewel,

and among jewels are the false and the genuine.

Art's crown kept glorying in it,

until ravaging death claimed it for itself.

If they could, in honor of its resting place,

the gardens and great spreading trees would walk to it.

    قَعَدَت وَهيضَ لَها الغَداةَ جَناحُ

    Have mercy, Abd al-Hayy! Your mother is an old woman;

she sits, and this morning her wing was broken.

Her staff was broken, so she has no staff,

and her son, most generous and open-handed, has died.

God knows: if in her heart there is

a wound, then in Egypt's entrails there are many wounds.

    وَبُكا الشُعوبِ إِذا النَوابِغُ طاحوا

    And people are the mourned and the mourners in their wake;

and nations weep when their geniuses fall.

For the drinking companions, when you sang and they drank,

your voice among them and the wine were alike.

Over what you said, singing and conversing,

ears and souls vied with one another.

You left a world that weighed you down with loss,

and won nearness to God, and that is profit.

O breaker of your promise, your promise cannot depart

from me, nor can you depart from my heart.

Death toyed with it and with you, and gone was

a bond in which we found comfort through our companionship.

When, with loved ones and hopes, we reached

the door of joy, the key went missing.

    هَيهاتَ في رَيبِ المَنونِ مِزاحُ

    They thought the herald of your death was joking in the gatherings;

far from it! There is no jest in death's calamities.

    عِندَ المَنِيَّةِ يَجزَعُ المِفراحُ

    Seriousness is the end of every heedless player;

at death, even the merry-hearted are distraught.

The fates, when they struck you, struck a nightingale

that a headstrong impulse revealed in life's snare.

His sighs were love's burning pangs, and his speech

the cooing of doves, if they were eloquent.

And they slit a throat upon whose strings

wounds were healed and sorrows slaughtered.

And they blunted the blade of that tongue,

whose force the vile and the brazen feared.

And they surrendered your palm to decay; how often

wealth lay upon it at evening, free for all!

A spirit reached the utmost lightness, and so chose

a lodging beyond the reach of bodies.

Rise, sing to the youths of Paradise and its houris,

and send forth your echo, for we are all spirits.
