Stand for the teacher and accord him full reverence.

The teacher comes close to being a messenger.

Have you known anyone nobler or more exalted than one

Who builds and shapes souls and minds?

Glory to You, O God, the best teacher!

You taught the earliest generations through the pen.

You brought this mind out of its darkness

And guided it to the manifest light as its path.

And You fashioned it through the teacher's hand, at times

As rusted iron, and at times polished.

You sent Moses with the Torah as a guide,

And the Virgin's son—so teach the Gospel.

    فَسَقى الحَديثَ وَناوَلَ التَنزيلا

    And You made Muhammad gush forth as a spring of eloquence;

He gave his sayings to drink and handed out revelation.

You taught Greece and Egypt, but both turned away

From every sun that would not set.

Today both have returned to a state of childhood

In learning, seeking it as children.

    ما بالُ مَغرِبِها عَلَيهِ أُديلا

    From the earth's east the suns shone forth together;

Why has its west been given ascendancy over it?

O earth, since the teacher lost himself,

A barrier has been set between the suns and your east.

Gone are those who defended the truth of their knowledge

And found grievous torment sweet for its sake,

In a world that went through life bound

To a single ruler, haltered and shackled by him.

The tyrant's world struck it down, just as heads fell

    Dazed beneath the sun's blow.

Socrates gave the cup—death though it was—

A lover's lips, yearning to kiss.

    فَأَبى وَآثَرَ أَن يَموتَ نَبيلا

    They offered him life, but it was folly;

He refused and chose to die nobly.

Indeed, courage is plentiful in hearts,

But I have found few brave minds.

Indeed, He who made truth bitter as colocynth

Has left no generation without people of truth.

    قُتِلَ الغَرامُ كَمِ اِستَباحَ قَتيلا

    And often passion has killed its champions;

May passion be slain! How many victims it has claimed!

And does everyone who defended the truth acquire

Hatreds and vendettas among the masses?

Were I to believe in the cross and its ordeal,

I would make Christ's crucifixion my proof.

O teachers of the Valley, guides of its young,

And shapers of its youth, in whom hope rests,

And bearers, when called to teach,

Of the trust's heavy burden, for which you must answer:

    وَرِمَت بِدَنلوبٍ فَكانَ الفيلا

    Our foot once moved lightly toward it;

It swelled because of Dunlop and became an elephant.

Until we saw Egypt advance a finger's breadth

In learning when kingdoms walked a mile.

    Those villages, filled with illiteracy,

Have seen no lamp since Khufu's time.

You find those whose forefather built the obelisk

Unable to fashion even a needle.

And they are pampered when someone wishes to lead them,

Like lambs that grow tame at the sight of caresses.

    فَالناجِحونَ أَلَدُّهُم تَرتيلا

    Men recite their desires to them;

Those who succeed are the fiercest of them in chanting.

    كَيفَ الحَياةُ عَلى يَدَي عِزريلا

    No community can live upon ignorance;

How can there be life in Azrael's hands?

By God, were it not for tongues and gifted minds

That circulated like wine among the keen minds of youth,

And tended their souls for forty years,

    Assailing despair and planting hope,

They knew their barren places and came in succession,

Overflowing like a spring and pouring like rainclouds,

Doing good to the country, yet shy

Of being repaid for kindness with praise,

    Neither Dunlop nor his teaching

Would have availed even a thread's worth in hardship.

    تَجِدوهُمُ كَهفَ الحُقوقِ كُهولا

    Raise the homeland's youths in fairness;

You will find them a refuge for rights in maturity.

For it is fairness that builds upright characters,

And it is fairness that builds just souls,

And straightens the reasoning of every crooked thinker,

And shows him sound judgment in affairs.

And if the teacher is not just, there walks

A feeble spirit of justice among the young.

And if the teacher's inward gaze is faulty,

The inner eyes formed at his hands emerge cross-eyed.

And if guidance springs from the motives of caprice

And from conceit, then call it misguidance.

And if a people's morals are stricken,

Hold a mourning rite for them, with wailing.

I truly excuse you and consider your burden

Heavy among the burdens that men bear.

Others have found helpers, while you have been denied,

In Egypt, the great assistance of mothers.

And when women grow up in illiteracy,

    Men suckle ignorance and idleness.

The orphan is not one whose parents have finished with

Life's troubles and left him abased,

Then found in the wise world, in their stead,

And in time's good upbringing, a substitute.

The true orphan is the one for whom you find

A mother who has deserted him, or a father preoccupied.

Egypt, if she looks back over her days,

Will find no equal to the great Saturday.

Tomorrow Parliament's portico will be extended,

As deep sheltering shade over the happy Valley.

We hope, when education stirs its sorrow,

That it will not be miserly toward the country.

Tell the young today: blessed be your planting!

The fruit-clusters draw near, brought wholly within reach.

    Salute every martyr laid away,

And place a wreath upon his stones.

So that the living man's share of your gratitude

May be abundant, and the dead man's share of it generous.

The constitution cannot feel its spirit in you

Until it sees its unknown soldier.

I adjure you by that pure blood:

Do not send an ignoramus to Parliament.

For someone will surely ask about the seats:

Have they borne merit, or merely useless excess?

If you put forward a deficient representative,

You will find no representation even at his best.

So summon to those seats people worthy of trust, and give

Preference to those among them with insight.

One who falls short may change, but you will never find

Anyone who can change the ignorance of a foolish nature.

For many a remark about men you have heard,

Which then passed away as though it had never been said.

And how often, with honor and affection, you have supported

One who had stood forsaken among you.

Generosity and forgiveness dwell in youth, and often

The young have been noble in character and inclination.

Rise, unite the fathers' generation, and raise

The voice of youth, beloved and accepted.

How distant the goals! Yet I

Find your steadfastness a guarantor of reaching them.

    فَاللَهُ خَيرٌ كافِلاً وَوَكيلا

    So entrust success to God, and persevere;

For God is the best guarantor and trustee.
