أَتىcame to نَبِيَّthe prophet of اللَهِGod يَوماًone day ثَعلَبُa fox
فَقالَand he said ياO مَولايَmy lord إِنّيindeed I مُذنِبُa sinner
One day a fox came to God's prophet.
And said, “My lord, I am indeed a sinner.
قَدindeed سَوَّدَتhave blackened صَحيفَتيmy record الذُنوبُsins
وَإِنand if وَجَدتُI find شافِعاًan intercessor أَتوبُI shall repent
Sins have blackened my record.
And if I find an intercessor, I shall repent.
فَاِسأَلso ask إِلهيmy God عَفوَهُHis pardon الجَليلاgreat
لِتائِبٍfor a penitent قَدalready جاءَهُhas come to Him ذَليلاhumbled
So ask my God for His great pardon
For a penitent who has come to Him humbled.
وَإِنَّنيand indeed I وَإِنand though أَسَأتُI behaved badly السَيراconduct
عَمِلتُI have done شَرّاًevil وَعَملتُand I have done خَيراgood
And I, though I have behaved badly,
Have done evil and have done good.
فَقَدfor indeed أَتانيcame to me ذاتَone يَومٍday أَرنَبُa rabbit
يَرتَعُgrazes تَحتَbeneath مَنزِليmy dwelling وَيَلعَبُand plays
For one day a rabbit came to me,
Grazing beneath my dwelling and playing.
وَلَمand not يَكُنwas مُراقِبٌa watcher هُنالِكاthere
لَكِنَّنيbut I تَرَكتُهُI left him alone مَعdespite ذَلِكاthat
And there was no watcher there,
Yet I left him alone nevertheless,
إِذfor عِفتُI loathed فيin اِفتِراسِهِdevouring him الدَناءَهbaseness
فَلَمso did not يَصِلهُreach him مِنfrom يَديmy hand مَساءَهharm
For I loathed the baseness of devouring him,
So no harm reached him from my hand.”
وَكانَand was فيin المَجلِسِthe assembly ذاكَthat الأَرنَبُthe rabbit
يَسمَعُhears ماwhat يُبديexpresses هُناكَthere الثَعلَبُthe fox
And that rabbit was in the assembly,
Listening to what the fox was saying there.
فَقالَso he said لَمّاwhen اِنقَطَعَended الحَديثُthe speech
قَدindeed كانَwas ذاكَthat الزُهدُself-denial ياO خَبيثُscoundrel
So, when the speech ended, he said:
“That self-denial, you scoundrel, was shown
وَأَنتَwhile you بَينَbetween المَوتِdeath وَالحَياةِand life
مِنfrom تُخمَةindigestion from overeating أَلقَتكَcast you فيinto الفَلاةِthe wilderness
While you were between death and life,
From a surfeit that had cast you into the wilderness.”
