Strangers to their kin, exiles from home,

Through you they found a home and close kin.

Tell those who, when charity is mentioned to them,

Clench their palms and turn away in aversion:

    أأخذتم لهمُ عهد السنين

    Beware what the days may bring your descendants;

Have you secured a pledge from the years for them?

God exacts retribution, however long the delay,

And each is requited as he once requited others.

Fortune was fashioned into pearls and pebbles

By the Creator of humankind from water and clay.

A nursling whose day drips with misery

Will lavish blessings tomorrow on all humanity.

Is his people's pillar, the lion of the lair.

Or one long silent, blind in childhood—

Within his two cloaks is eloquent al-Ma'arri.

Bore one who makes light of the Pleiades.

Lord of the Nile and its valley alike,

Your Egypt is the white blaze, and the East the brow.
