O neighbor of the valley, I was enraptured, and there returned to me
O neighbor of the valley, you brought me joy
what deepened my longing to see you.
And increased my longing to see you

I spent my night drowned in bliss
dreamlike memories of you.
Recalling dreams of you

لمّا سموت به وصنتُ هواك
I pictured my love for you in memory and in slumber,
I imagined your love and chastity
when I exalted it and safeguarded my love for you.
When I aspired to you and guarded your love

والذكريات صدى السنين الحاكي
And how many a tear my heart sheds at remembrance!
And how many regrets my heart has
And memories are the echo that retells the years.
Over memories that tell of the passing years

And I passed by the gardens on a hill,
I passed by the gardens slowly
where my visions so often danced with yours.
Where my visions used to dance seeing you

Green, it had bewitched spring with its coy charm;
Green, the spring adorned them
lush with trees—I used to meet you in front of it.
I used to find you, a singing beauty, near them

والروض أسكرهُ الصبا بشذاك
I did not know the sweetness of an embrace in love,
I did not know the sweetness of embracing love
while the east breeze intoxicated the garden with your fragrance.
And the meadow intoxicated by your scent

I did not know, while yearning screams in my blood
until my arm grew tender and enfolded you.
Until your arm gently slowed me, restraining me

And the curves of your bān-tree form swayed in my hand,
I cuddled the sides of your bend, drunk
intoxicated, and your flanks caressed my ribs.
Your embrace tickled my ribs, restraining me

How could anemones compare with you when they swayed—
Where are the anemones from you, when they swayed
your cheeks—and reddened with their bashfulness?
And your cheek reddened more than their rustle

And I entered two nights—your tresses and the darkness—
You entered my soft nights, and the darkness
and intoxication enticed me with what enticed you.
And drunkenness tempted me with what tempted you

Then passion overflowed, and my emotions vied to claim you,
Love prevailed, and my feelings assaulted you
and, like the radiant dawn, I kissed your mouth.
And I kissed you like the radiant dawn, your mouth

To your eyes in the language of love, your eyes

Brown-skinned one, O my desire and my heart's delight,
Brown-skinned beauty, my question and joy of my soul
time was gathered up and became the day I met you.
The days collected and there was the day I met you
