عهد الوفاء وإن غبنا مقيمينا
O dwellers of Egypt, we still abide by
O dwellers of Egypt, we are still true
the pledge of fidelity, steadfast though we are absent.
To our bond of loyalty, though far from our homes
هلاwill you not بعثتمyou send لناto us منfrom ماءthe water of نهركمyour river
هلا بعثتم لنا من ماء نهركم
شيئاa little نبلwe moisten بهwith it أحشاءthe insides of صاديناour thirsty one
شيئا نبل به أحشاء صادينا
Will you not send us, from your river’s water,
Won't you send us some water from your river
a little to moisten the insides of the thirsty among us?
With which we may wet the insides of our water skins?
كلall المناهلthe watering places بعدafter النيلthe Nile آسنةstagnant
كل المناهل بعد النيل آسنة
ماhow أبعدfar away النيلthe Nile إلاexcept عنfrom أمانيناour hopes
ما أبعد النيل إلا عن أمانينا
All watering places after the Nile are stagnant;
After the Nile, all springs are misery -
how far away the Nile is—except from our hopes!
