ياO مَلَكاًan angel تَعَبَّداworshipped devoutly
O angel who worshipped devoutly,
O Angel of worship, praying devoutly,
Praying and affirming God's oneness,
Blessed in his day, and tomorrow auspicious,
مُبارَكاًblessed فيin يَومِهِhis day
وَالأَمسِand yesterday مَيموناًauspicious غَداtomorrow
Blessed in his day,
Destined for a nation deserving of joy,
And yesterday, auspicious tomorrow,
It made him its crown, its glory, its leader,
مُسَخَّراًmade to serve لِأُمَّةٍfor a nation
مِنof حَقِّهاits right أَنthat تَسعَداit be happy
Made to serve a nation
It turned away wherever he walked,
Whose right it is to be happy.
And bowed down wherever he appeared,
قَدindeed جَعَلَتهُit has made him تاجَهاits crown
وَعِزَّهاand its glory وَالسُؤدُداand eminence
It has made him its crown,
Revering him in his beauty,
And its glory and eminence;
As it would revere the full moon,
وَأَعرَضَتand it turned aside حَيثُwherever مَشىhe walked
وَأَطرَقَتand it bowed its head حَيثَwherever بَداhe appeared
And it turned aside wherever he walked,
You are a ray from the Most High
And bowed its head wherever he appeared.
That God sent down as guidance,
تُجِلُّهُit reveres him فيin حُسنِهِhis beauty
كَماas تُجِلُّit reveres الفَرقَداthe star Farqad
It reveres him in his beauty,
How many homes has it illuminated?
As it reveres the star Farqad.
How many mosques given light?
أَنتَyou شُعاعٌa ray مِنfrom عَلٍon high
أَنزَلَهُsent it down اللَهُGod هُدىguidance
You are a ray from on high,
How many markets has it adorned
Sent down by God as guidance.
With beauty, enhancing the land?
كَمhow many قَدindeed أَضاءَit illuminated مَنزِلاًa home
وَكَمand how many أَنارَit lit up مَسجِداa mosque
How many a home it has lit,
Were it not for piety I would say
And how many a mosque it has illumined,
None but you has God created,
وَكَمand how many كَساit clothed الأَسواقَthe marketplaces مِنwith
حُسنٍbeauty وَزانَand adorned البَلَداthe land
And how many marketplaces it has clothed in
If you wish, you can be gentle,
Beauty, and adorned the land!
Or, if you prefer, be firm,
لَولاwere it not for التُقىpiety لَقُلتُI would surely say لَمdid not
يَخلُقcreate سِواكَanyone but you الوَلَداthe child
Were it not for piety, I would say: no one
And if you desire error, it strays,
But you created the child.
Or if you seek right, it is guided,
إِنif شِئتَyou wish كانَhe would be العَيرَthe ass أَوor
إِنif شِئتَyou wish كانَhe would be الأَسَداthe lion
If you wish, he will be an ass; or
You are the voice in this house
If you wish, he will be a lion.
And it echoes back your tone,
وَإِنand if تُرِدyou desire غَيّاًerror غَوىhe goes astray
أَوor تَبغِyou seek رُشداًright guidance رَشَداhe follows the right path
And if you desire error, he goes astray;
Like the parrot in its cage
Or if you seek right guidance, he follows the right path.
That mimics all it’s shown,
وَالبَيتُand the home أَنتَyou الصَوتُthe voice فيin
هِit وَهوَand he لِلصَوتِfor the voice صَدىan echo
And the home—you are the voice within
Like soft clay in the potter’s hands
It, and he is the voice's echo.
Shaped according to his design,
كَالبَبَّغاlike a parrot فيin قَفَصٍa cage
قيلَit was said لَهُto it فَقَلَّداso it imitated
Like a parrot in a cage,
It takes on what you have trained it to,
It was spoken to, and so it mimicked;
And man becomes what habits refine,
وَكَالقَضيبِand like a rod اللَدنِsupple قَدindeed
طاوَعَyielded to فيin الشَكلِshaping اليَداthe hand
And like a supple rod that has
You stand alone in the world
Yielded to the hand in taking shape.
In your excellence, peerless displayed,
يَأخُذُhe takes on ماwhat عَوَّدتَهُyou have accustomed him to
وَالمَرءُand a man ماwhat تَعَوَّداhe grows accustomed to
He takes on what you have accustomed him to,
And every lion the Imam targeted
And a man is what he grows accustomed to—
In battle, by you was waylaid,
مِمّاof what اِنفَرَدتَyou stood apart فيamong الوَرىhumankind
بِفَضلِهِthrough its excellence وَاِنفَرَداand he stood apart
Of that in which you stood apart among mankind
You it was who marshalled them
Through its excellence—and he stood apart too.
And drove them to perdition,
وَكُلُّand every لَيثٍlion قَدindeed رَمىhurled
بِهِwith him الإِمامُthe Imam فيamong العِداthe foes
And every lion that has been hurled
Saying: Be for God and the Sultan,
By the Imam against the foes—
And for the Turks a redemption!
أَنتَyou الَّذيthe one who جَنَّدتَهُenlisted him
وَسُقتَهُand drove him إِلىto الرَدىdeath
You are the one who enlisted him,
And drove him to his death,
وَقُلتَand you said كُنbe لِلَّهِfor God وَالسand the (start of 'sultan')
سُلطانِsultan وَالتُركِand the Turks فِدىa sacrifice
And you said: 'Be for God and the
Sultan and the Turks a sacrifice.'
