No—by the raisins and a snack of chickpeas,
No, not the raisins or a bite of chickpeas
and by the litany and praise of God from a goggling man,
Nor roses or praise from the perfumed ones

إن قيل قم في حلقة الذكرى أرقص
and by drool running over piety's lip,
Not even a single coin placed gently
if told, 'Rise in the circle of remembrance—dance!'
Upon lips that meet, if asked to dance recalling past days

No flattery or pretense or sneakiness

No stabbing of the noble homeland or its people

Al-Shadhili, though his offshoot has put on airs,
A place of dignity like fine linen
is but an object of honor, like the archpriest.

The sons sank to the depths with their forebear,
After the noble walked upon it with feet unsoiled
after he had trodden Suha with the arch of his foot.
