Look at the moons—how they vanish.

And at the faces of good fortune—how they change.

And at the lofty mountains—how they are bent by

Death the ravager: one gesture, and they bend.

And at the winds, falling short of their resting place,

Laid low, with earth heaped over them.

And at the eagles, whose lives were cut short,

Though eagles' lives are known to be long.

In every rank and every lofty station,

A moon among the radiant and exalted lies slain.

Fate hurls them down; there is no protector.

Alas, no one grants reprieve from fate.

The sky's conquest and its light have settled in the dust.

So earth is distraught, and the sky bereaved.

    المَوتُ لا يَخفى عَلَيهِ سَبيلُ

    Travel through the air, and seek refuge at Suha's forelock;

No path is hidden from Death.

And ride the eagle's wing: it cannot shield you from

An eagle within which Azrael flutters.

And every soul has its hour; whoever does not die

In it with honor dies abased.

Do you put your trust in life, though it is a field of death?

And in wishes the consumptive puts his trust.

    نُعمى الحَياةِ وَبُؤسُها تَضليلُ

    Pay no heed to its misery and its bliss;

Life's blessings and its misery are deception.

The interval between its bloom and its withering

Is the lifespan of roses—and it is very short.

This bearer of yesterday's glad tidings now announces a death,

Like a dream whose interpretation brings its opposite.

Around his tale there now flows in tears

What once flowed over it in joy.

And many weddings have concealed a funeral,

Like mottled snakes resting at noon in garden shade.

    O martyrs, never shall your

Radiant conquest, a noble deed for the sky, be forgotten.

And glory in this world belongs to the first builder,

And to whoever builds after him and raises it higher.

Had souls not perished on the paths to greatness,

No guide would have led the travelers along them.

And people are those who give their lives or wealth,

Or their knowledge; the rest are superfluous.

And victory's white blaze is the vanguard in battle,

And the army's followers are its white stockings.

Why halt, with only a mile remaining to Egypt?

Taurus lies beneath you, its gaze feeble,

Dulled when you rose among the clouds.

You loosen the rein for the wind, and it

Is surely docile for you, despite its tyranny.

Two after two, it never occurred to you

That Death was a third and a companion.

And among the wonders of your age is a friend's loyalty

To you in life and in death.

If one doomed to die could be ransomed, you would be ransomed

By an eagle in the air that clings jealously to life.

Which warriors who attained martyrdom before you

Had the sky's breadth and length for their tomb?

Its inhabitants come in the morning to greet you,

And praise of God and declarations of His oneness flutter.

And above Jesus's right hand is a wreath.

In a world whose inhabitants' breaths are

Perfume, and the murmur of their speech is gospel.

And toward it points, with his crowned head,

An old man, and with her innocent gaze, a virgin.

And today, desires and passion within it have

A torrent, and blood and tears a channel.

And time profanes the guarded secret.

Grief-stricken, not knowing how to speak.

Sorrows coursed through her; over all her groves,

Between streams and springs, withering spread.

In every plain, a moan and a lament,

And on every rugged height, a cry and a wail.

As though all the house of Umayya had been announced dead

To the Umayyad Mosque, now a desolate ruin.

Within it, the ranks bowed for you, and prayer was offered

For you, and measured recitation was drawn close

Is lofty on earth and deeply rooted in heaven.

Is borne between Suha and Jupiter.

Soldiers walk bearing it; and were they not

More entitled to this, Gabriel would have borne it.

Already dwelt, and generosity was a guest.

As though the dead man within it were a messenger.

And a sheltering shade in Furuq has embraced you,

Lodged among the minarets and fortresses,

And you have reached a threshold at the caliphate's gate,

Whose curtains are stroked and kissed,

Say to Imam Muhammad and his household:

The patience of the great under great affliction is beautiful.

O you whose worthy caliphate is a safeguard

For truth—you guarantee that it shall be upheld.

And God knows that among His caliphs there is

Justice that sets the realm upright when it leans.

And justice raises for kingdoms a wall

That neither army nor fleet can raise.

And gentleness is hoped for from Muhammad.

Has never ceased to bleed in the crescent's flank,

The champion of Barqa is bound and shackled?

Never should your unsheathed sword have been sheathed.

And preserve him; swords are few.
