ألاbehold بديارهمfor their homelands جنwent mad الكرامthe noble
ألا بديارهم جن الكرام
وشفهمand wore them thin بليلاهاfor its Layla الغرامpassion
وشفهم بليلاها الغرام
Lo, the noble have gone mad for their homelands,
In their abodes gathered the generous souls,
And passion for their Layla has worn them thin.
And their nights were filled with passion.
بلادlands أسفرrevealed الميلادbirth عنهاabout them
بلاد أسفر الميلاد عنها
وصرحتand proclaimed plainly الرضاعةsuckling والفطامand weaning
وصرحت الرضاعة والفطام
Lands that birth revealed,
Lands where the auspicious birth sprang forth,
And suckling and weaning made plain.
Where suckling and weaning took place.
وخالطand mingled with تربهاits soil وارفضّand scattered فيهwithin it
وخالط تربها وارفضّ فيه
رفاتcrumbled remains منof حبيبa loved one أوor عظامbones
رفات من حبيب أو عظام
And mingled with their soil and scattered within it
And he who cherished its soil and dwelled in it,
Are a loved one's remains, or bones.
Were the remains of a beloved or bones.
بناءan edifice منfrom أبوتناour forefathers الأواليthe earliest
بناء من أبوتنا الأوالي
يتممis completed بالبنينby the sons ويستدامand is perpetuated
يتمم بالبنين ويستدام
An edifice from our earliest forefathers,
A structure built by our early forefathers,
Completed by sons and made to endure.
To be completed with children and endure.
توالىcame in succession المحسنونthe benefactors فشيدوهso they raised it
توالى المحسنون فشيدوه
وأيدىand the hands المحسنونthe benefactors هيthey are الدعامthe pillars
وأيدى المحسنون هي الدعام
Benefactors came in succession and raised it;
The benefactors succeeded each other and erected it,
And the hands of benefactors are its pillars.
And the hands of the benefactors were its pillars.
وأبلجand a radiant one فيin عنانthe heights of الجودgenerosity فردpeerless
وأبلج في عنان الجود فرد
كمنزلةlike the station of السموالal-Samaw'al لاnot يرامwithin reach
كمنزلة السموال لا يرام
And a radiant one, peerless in generosity's heights,
A singular man generously poured forth,
Like al-Samaw'al's station, beyond reach.
Like the summit that cannot be aspired to.
يبيتspends the night النجمthe star يقبسdraws light منfrom ضياهhis radiance
يبيت النجم يقبس من ضياه
ويلمسهاand touches it فيرتجلthen improvises الجهامthe rainless cloud
ويلمسها فيرتجل الجهام
The star spends the night drawing light from his radiance;
The stars spend the night gleaming in its glow,
And the rainless cloud touches it, then improvises.
And the brave ones dismount to touch it.
لهfor him فيin الأعصرthe ages الأولىthe earliest سمىٌّa namesake
له في الأعصر الأولى سمىٌّ
إذاwhen ذكرis mentioned اسمهhis name ابتسمsmiles الذمامfidelity
إذا ذكر اسمه ابتسم الذمام
He has a namesake in the earliest ages;
In the early eras it had a name,
When his name is mentioned, fidelity smiles.
That made the clouds smile when mentioned.
كلاeach of the two الجبلينmountains حرnoble عبقريa genius
كلا الجبلين حر عبقري
لدىat محرابهhis sanctuary ملكa king همامvaliant
لدى محرابه ملك همام
Each of the two mountains is a noble genius;
The two mountains are free and genius,
At his sanctuary stands a valiant king.
Next to its altar is the steadfast king.
أُزيلواthey were driven out عنfrom معاقلهمtheir strongholds فأمسيso there came to be
أُزيلوا عن معاقلهم فأمسي
لهمfor them فيin معقلthe stronghold of الصخرrock اعتصامrefuge
لهم في معقل الصخر اعتصام
They were driven from their strongholds, and so there came to be
They were removed from their fortresses, so they spent the night
Refuge for them in the stronghold of rock.
Taking refuge in the rock fortress.
