Let the lion never submit to oppression.

The cub has pulled the stake out of the forest.

The cub has grown, and its fang has sprouted.

And its shoulders are cloaked in a mane.

Let it walk within its thickets,

And let it defend the forest's sanctuary.

And offer the world to its claws,

And send it into the world's deserts to hunt.

Youths of the valley, we have recognized your voice.

Welcome to the singing, melodious bird.

It is the voice of truth: it has not transgressed, nor

    Borne rancor, nor concealed envy.

And it is free of desire, which never mingles with

A good deed without corrupting it.

The nightingale stirred the two flanks of a hill

Where the owl had dwelt alone in the grove.

The lilies of the cities and the basil of the villages

Stood and sat along every road,

    كُلُّ سِربٍ قَد تَلاقى وَاِحتَشَد

    Out early, like bees in their swarms;

Each swarm had come together and assembled.

It gathered what few blossoms grew upon the hills,

Then gave honey in exchange for flowers.

It stretched out a palm to whoever met it,

And went on, shortening and lengthening its stride,

    Making the homelands its song,

And calling to the people: 'Who gives generously gains.'

Whenever it passed a door, it knocked on it,

Or saw a house along the road, it made for it.

Going out in the morning through the cities or toward the villages,

Out at evening, asking a piastre for the country.

O people, listen; attend to it.

Give your money to charity, and it will return.

    طالِبُ العَونِ لِمِصرٍ لا يُرَد

    Do not send their hand back empty;

One seeking aid for Egypt must not be turned away.

The people will see a wonder tomorrow:

The piastre will plant, build, and beget.

Through it God will raise industries

From a fall in which they have lain an eternity.

Or add to charity a house established

To combat tuberculosis or fight eye inflammation.

    لَم يَضِق عَنهُ وَلَم يَعجِز أَحَد

    And it is in their hands and within their power;

No one has lacked the means for it, nor been incapable.

That is the Egypt of tomorrow, building her dominion.

She called the builder and brought the tools,

And upon wealth she built her power,

With firm foundations and pillars raised high.

And made Bank Misr her refuge.

How fine the pillar, and how great the support!

An example of resolve that has gone far,

And whose reach in noble achievements has stretched far.

    كُلُّ عَصرٍ بِأَساليبَ جُدُد

    The age has restored it in its own fashion;

    Every age has new ways.

The sons have roused their fathers,

And from the valley the cub has called the lion.

Egypt and her glory have now become

The father's aspiration or the son's work.

Yesterday this resolve ran its race,

And reached the goal in pursuit of right.

O generation in which we place our hopes for tomorrow,

Your tomorrow is glory, and your life prosperity.

You are in the torrent's path, and indeed

Whoever sleeps in the torrent's path has gone astray.

You led in the cause of right; lead now in its like,

In fields of thrift or paths of sound judgment.

    وَاِدَّخِر فيهِ لِعامٍ لا تَجِد

    Many a year finds you prosperous;

And save in it for a year of want.

Teach the fathers, and cry out, saying:

O people, work together and be thrifty.

Join piastre to piastre, and there will be

For you, from their joining, wealth heaped high.

    وَاِتَّخِذ سوقاً إِذا سوقٌ كَسَد

    Pursue cotton, and work at other things too;

And find another market when one stagnates.

Before cotton, we were a nation

That descended to the valley, pastured flocks, and came to water.

We have reached the farthest bounds in the crafts,

And in ancient times we built what lives forever.

And we spun garments before Idris,

And wove chain mail before Dawud.

If today you are a leading banner,

How many banners were raised for you yesterday!
