لقد نقل الراوون عني حكاية

وقالوا كلاما ما أشدّ وأشاما
Indeed, the narrators have recounted a tale about me,
The storytellers have conveyed about me a tale,
And spoken words—how harsh and ill-omened!
And they have said words full of bitterness and sorrow.
أيصفعwould ... slap? مثليsomeone like me ناشئa youth ويراعتيwhile my reed pen
أيصفع مثلي ناشئ ويراعتي
أسالتmade flow دموعtears القومthe people فيin مصرEgypt عَندماcrimson dye
أسالت دموع القوم في مصر عَندما
Would a youth slap someone like me, while my reed pen
Does one like me slap a youth I have raised?
