لَقَدindeed لامَنيreproached me ياO هِندُHind فيfor الحُبِّlove لائِمٌa reproacher
مُحِبٌّa loving man إِذاwhen عُدَّare counted الصِحابُthe friends حَبيبُa dear friend
Indeed, O Hind, a reproacher has reproached me for love—
The critic chided me, O Hind, about love, a blamer
A loving man, a dear friend when friends are counted.
A lover, if company is counted, is a comrade
فَماso not هُوَhe بِالواشيa tale-bearer عَلىaccording to مَذهَبِthe creed of الهَوىlove
وَلاnor هُوَhe فيin شَرعِthe law of الوِدادِaffection مُريبُsuspect
So, by love's creed, he is no tale-bearer,
Yet he's no talebearer, by passion’s creed,
Nor is he suspect under affection's law.
Nor doubtful, by affection’s law, of probity.
وَصَفتُI described لَهُto him مَنwho أَنتِyou ثُمَّthen جَرىtook place لَناbetween us
حَديثٌa conversation يَهُمُّinterests العاشِقينَthe lovers عَجيبُwondrous
I described to him who you are; then between us arose
I told him who you were, then we conversed
A wondrous conversation of interest to lovers.
In wondrous talk enchanting to lovers.
وَقُلتُand I said لَهto him صَبراًpatience فَكُلُّfor every أَخيa man of هَوىpassion
عَلىat يَدِthe hand of مَنthe one whom يَهوىhe loves غَداًtomorrow سَيَتوبُwill repent
And I said to him, 'Patience! For every lover
I said, “Have patience.” Every brother I love
Will repent tomorrow at the hands of the one he loves.'
Will repent tomorrow at his beloved’s hand.
