كُلُّ اِمرِئٍ رَهنٌ بِطَيِّ كِتابِهِ
In death, and in its causes, lies what baffles;
Death has no end, its causes ensnare
every person is hostage to the closing of his book.
Each person's fate written, none can evade

It is a lion, by your life: one who dies by its claw
Lion you are, dying with glory astride
at the encounter is like one who dies by its fang.
Not like dying from snakebite, disgraced

If it sleeps, leaving you alone, every medicine works;
If destiny sleeps, life prospers and thrives
or, if it does not sleep, medicine is among its minions.
Else, from its tail comes ruin, life deprived

The sickness of souls—and every sickness before it
Before any illness, the soul's sickness lies
is a care whose coming they forgot with its passing.
Grief comes, makes you forget whence derived

The soul is death's foe, yet
The soul battles death but heedless it lives
it entered life and its labors through death's gate.
Through life's gates, its mission deprived

وَتَضيقُ عَنهُ عَلى قَصيرِ عَذابِهِ
It makes room for life despite its long affliction,
Long trials seem short in life's tapestry
yet has none for death despite its brief torment.
While short pains seem so long, unsatisfied

It is the night traveler's lodging, the evening traveler's rest,
Home for the weary, rest for the sprier
for whom the day grew long with his hurried journeying.
Though for most, life is longer, unsatisfied

Cure for the spirit, its pains to relieve
and this body's cure for its ailments.
Balm for the body from harm to deprive

Who enjoys no death, through great deeds will live
men have lived forever, and through illustrious deeds.
Heroic acts make one death deride

He is not dead whose traces the earth has gathered,
The dead remain if their works stay alive
and whose writings the world has made its own.
As the world is imprinted with what they contrived

Say to the arrogant, rich and esteemed
and the lineages of his that people esteem:
Exalted lineage cannot death override

This earthly surface turns away from those present upon it,
This life ignores warnings, slumbers unredeemed
and sleeps its eyelids' fill, heedless of those absent from it,
Cares not for loss till the final collide

Ruins and rubble - that is its fate predecreed
its two brocaded cheeks, building it up through his own ruin.
Death renovates what finery tried to hide

A mosquito hunted down, on Upper Egypt's open road,
A gnat challenging death was slapped in its conceit
the hunter of its hawk and eagle in the air.
Against the earth, its hunter could not chide

And the fly's proboscis struck a cheek
The fly's proboscis stabbed where blades failed to skewer
made for India's sword, or for its point.
Made for the Indian sword or the fly's snide

It flew with fate's covert feather, and looked about
By destiny's whisper the deed was done quick
with its two precious eyes, and touched with its saliva.
Its innocence lost by its saliva's slide

Do not ever listen to the band of spiritualists, to what
Hear not what spirits say in ignorance boast
they said through their false science and its lies.
With lies and fabricated knowledge they chide

The spirit belongs to the All-Merciful—exalted is His majesty;
The soul belongs to God, His might exceeds all
it is among the guarded treasures of His knowledge and His unseen mysteries.
His knowledge profound, where none can reside

Deluded they are by their conceit's downfall
the delusions of one who has lost command of his nerves.
Like the defeated, wits all set aside

The tyrant of the ages has not returned; rather,
No tyranny lasts, judgement day will appall
the Day of Reckoning will be the day of his return.
When all evil's reckoned, none can deride

So leave him sheathed in the land of wonders;
The tyrant when alone can be withstood
do not brandish him over its people's necks as of old.
Not under his crown and robes of pride

The despot can be borne in his sarcophagus,
While the lone fool, his harm stops in the wood
not beneath his two crowns and upon his couch.
Like a sheathed sword, danger put aside

And in his grave one is safe from an autocrat's evil,
Was Tutankhamun embalmed but to delude?
like a sword: evil sleeps behind its sheath.
His soul dressed as a gnat, all pomp denied?

Or plotting your ruin for companionship true?
the mosquitoes' shirts and their contemptible skin?

Or would he repay you with death for companionship,
By God, if Giza's pyramids were your gift
when his loyalty to his companions is long-established?
It would be too small for all you provided

By God, had he given you the two pyramids made of
You brought it glory, made it your heir
gold, that would have been the least reward for you.

You are his herald and the keeper of his palace,
All people you told of its hallowed prayer
and the nobles' usher among his chamberlains.
And gathered them around it, their faith assured

You told the peoples of the age where he lay,
Without you adorning its stony lair
and gathered them in his courtyard and spacious precincts.
No added glory would have endured

he would not have surpassed his peers in honor.

in glory, and the builder upon his inherited honors,
Time passed as you piloted its course assured

where time crept and grew up within its tunnels.

Had the dead left their stone chambers there
Undeterred, undaunted, you persevered
and looked around, they would have been bewildered like its lizards.
Until you unlocked all mysteries obscured

Reaching history's close, all was made clear
until he returned with its treasures and prized riches.

Pharaoh amid his food and drink.

Fragrant aloeswood is the timber of his bed,
A grave holding what no scabbard contained
and glinting pearls the embroidery of his clothes.
Of bygone glory and pomp assured

And it is as though the pickers' palms had finished with
Civilisation's palace, culture's fane
his fruits this morning, and his fresh dates.

There time bears its burdens all the same
of mighty kingship's halo and its forest.

Enemies sleep, their hatreds restrain
that is the halting-place for the mounts of this world's brother.

The Valley of Kings wept, eyes complaining
and the friend there forgets his love for his loved ones.

From a tomb, civilization's book ascertaining

You made it renowned in the world, and raised it—
You detailed it, words concise, sparkling like lightning
its broad plains and hills—above the earth's surface.
Missives built on its dictates immured

And the seas beyond it, spread assured

and across the ocean, beyond its surging waters.
None built with mere words could have endured

akin to their own perfected art and its very essence.

So you raised a pillar for the cause which
Sahban could not have raised with the magic of his oratory.
