أَناI إِنif بَذَلتُI sacrificed الروحَthe soul كَيفَhow أُلامُam I blamed
لَمّاwhen رَمَتshot فَأَصابَتِand struck الآرامُthe gazelles
If I sacrifice my soul, how can I be blamed
If I give my soul, how can I blame
When the gazelles have shot and struck their mark?
When it aimed and hit the target
عَمَدَتaimed إِلىat قَلبيmy heart بِسَهمٍwith an arrow نافِذٍpiercing
فيهِin it لِمَحتومِfor the inescapable القَضاءِfate سِهامُarrows
They aimed at my heart with a piercing arrow;
It went straight to my heart with a piercing arrow
Within it, inexorable fate has arrows.
In it the arrows of predetermined fate
ياO قَلبُheart لاdo not تَجزَعdespair لِحادِثَةِat the calamity of الهَوىlove
وَاِصبِرand be patient فَماfor there is no لِلحادِثاتِfor calamities دَوامُpermanence
O heart, do not despair at love's calamity,
O heart, do not grieve for the occurrence of passion
And be patient, for calamities do not last.
And be patient, for events do not last
عَرَفَتknew قُلوبُhearts الناسِof people قَبلَكَbefore you ماwhat الجَوىlove's anguish
وَأَذاقَهاand made them taste it قَدَرٌfate لَهُit has أَحكامُdecrees
People's hearts knew before you what love's anguish was,
Hearts of people before you knew what passion is
And fate, with its decrees, made them taste it.
And fate made them taste what it dictates
تَجريrun العُقولُthe minds بِأَهلِهاwith their owners فَإِذاthen when جَرىit runs its course
كَبَتِstumbled العُقولُthe minds وَزَلَّتِand slipped الأَحلامُpowers of judgment
Minds carry their owners forward; then, when fate runs its course,
Reasons flow with their people, so when they flow
Minds stumble, and sound judgment slips.
Reasons are suppressed and dreams stagger
أَكُنتُwas I أَعلَمُI knew وَالحَوادِثُthough calamities جَمَّةٌnumerous
أَنَّthat الحَوادِثَcalamities مُقلَةٌan eye وَقَوامُand a figure
Could I have known, though calamities are many,
Did I know, while events are numerous
That calamities were an eye and a figure?
That events are fading and will cease
جَنَياthey both did harm عَلىto كَبِديmy liver وَماyet not عَرَّضتُهاI exposed it
كَبِديmy liver عَلَيكِupon you مِنَfrom البَريءِthe innocent one سَلامُpeace
They both harmed my liver, though I had not exposed it;
It harmed my liver, and I did not expose it
My liver, peace be upon you from one who is blameless.
My liver's innocent greeting unto you
وَلَقَدand indeed أَقولُI say لِمَنto whoever يَحُثُّurges on كُؤوسَهاher cups
قَعَدَتsat down كُؤوسُكِyour cups وَالهُمومُwhile sorrows قِيامُstanding
And indeed I say to whoever urges her cups along:
And I say to whoever stirs its cups
Your cups have sat down, while sorrows stand.
Your cups are empty and worries upright
لَمdid not تَجرِflow بَينَbetween جَوانِحيmy ribs إِلّاexcept كَماas
جَرَتِflowed الدِنانَthe wine jars بِهاwith it وَسالَand streamed الجامُthe goblet
It flowed between my ribs only as
It did not flow between my ribs except as
The wine jars flowed with it, and the goblet streamed.
The jars flowed with it and the cup poured
