أَبكيكَI weep for you إِسماعيلَIsmail مِصرَof Egypt وَفيand in البُكاweeping
بَعدَafter التَذَكُّرِremembrance راحَةُrelief المُستَعبِرِthe weeper
I weep for you, Ismail of Egypt; and in weeping,
I weep for you, O Egypt, with copious tears
after remembrance, lies the weeper's relief.
After remembering brings comfort to the grieving soul
وَمِنَand among القِيامِfulfilling بِبَعضِsome of حَقِّكَyour due أَنَّنيthat I
أَرقىI rise لِعِزِّكَfor your glory وَالنَعيمِand the bliss المُدبِرِdeparting
And part of fulfilling your due is that I
And part of doing you justice is that I
rise for your glory and the bliss now departed.
Aspire to your glory and enduring bliss
هَذيthese بُيوتُhouses of الرومِthe Romans كَيفَhow سَكَنتَهاyou dwelt in them
بَعدَafter القُصورِthe palaces المُزرِياتِputting to shame بِقَيصَرِCaesar
These are the Romans' houses—how did you dwell in them
Are these the houses of Rome that you have occupied
after palaces that put Caesar to shame?
After the splendid palaces of Caesar?
وَمِنَand among العَجائِبِthe wonders أَنَّthat نَفسَكَyour soul أَقصَرَتheld back
وَالدَهرُwhile time فيin إِحراجِهاdistressing it لَمdid not يُقصِرِcease
And among the wonders is that your soul held back,
And among the wonders is that you yourself have diminished
while time never ceased to torment it.
While time in its cruelty did not fail you
ماnot زالَceased يُخليleaving empty مِنكَof you كُلَّevery مَحِلَّةٍabode
حَتّىuntil دُفِعتَyou were driven إِلىto المَكانِthe place الأَقفَرِdesolate
It kept leaving every abode empty of you,
It kept emptying you of all your dwellings
until you were driven to the desolate place.
Until you were driven to the most barren place
نَظَرَlooked الزَمانُtime إِلىupon دِيارِكَyour dwellings كُلِّهاall of them
نَظَرَthe gaze of الرَشيدِal-Rashid إِلىupon مَنازِلِthe homes of جَعفَرِJa'far
Time looked upon all your dwellings
Time looked upon all your abodes
as al-Rashid looked upon Ja'far's homes.
As al-Rashid looked upon Ja'far's dwellings
