I was asked, “What is art?” I said, “Every beautiful thing

Whose beauty fills the soul is art.”

And if art is not innate in you,

You would be nearer wisdom by leaving it.

And if you add to what your predecessor built

Nothing, then you are no pillar of art.

That met rain clouds beneath March’s shade.

Calligraphy swore, after Mu’nis or Ja’far,

To choose no right hand but yours.

Your handwriting—if luck could be replaced

By anything beautiful—would surely replace it.

For the daughters of reason, and a truer companion.

Every soft-cheeked woman longs for it

As a beauty spot, and every dark-eyed woman as an eyelid.

Al-Walid’s dance-stirring verses are most wondrous in wording

Among its parts, and most stirring in meaning.

Robes: ever since meanings were clothed in them,

We have not seen them concern themselves with fine wording.
