اللَهُGod فيregarding الخَلقِcreation مِنamong صَبٍّa lovesick lover وَمِنand among عانيa captive
تَفنىperish القُلوبُthe hearts وَيَبقىand remains قَلبُكِyour heart الجانيthe guilty one
For God's sake, have mercy on His creatures—the lovesick and the captive!
God in creating is gentle and sympathetic
Hearts perish, while your guilty heart remains.
Hearts pass away but yours remains, O tormentor of my soul
صونيsafeguard جَمالَكِyour beauty عَنّاfrom us إِنَّناindeed we بَشَرٌhuman beings

Keep your beauty from us; we are human,
Guard your beauty from us - we are but mortal men
made of dust, while this beauty is spiritual.
Made of dust while such beauty is spiritual

Or seek a heavenly sphere to dwell in as an angel,
Or seek out a sphere where an angel can house you
who has laid no snare in the perishing world,
One who took no partner in this fleeting world
يَنسابُhe glides فيin النورِthe light مَشغوفاًenraptured بِصورَتِهِby his form

gliding in the light, enraptured by his own form,
Flowing in light, enraptured by your image
blissful amid exquisite adornments, at peace.
Delighting in the adornments of gentle beauty
إِذاwhen تَبَسَّمَhe smiles أَبدىreveals الكَونُthe universe زينَتَهُits adornment
وَإِنand if تَنَفَّسَhe breathes أَهدىbestows طيبَthe fragrance رَيحانِof sweet basil
When he smiles, the universe reveals its adornment,
When you smile the universe shows its ornaments
and if he breathes, he bestows sweet basil's fragrance.
And when you breathe you bestow the scent of sweet basil
وَأَشرِقيand shine forth مِنfrom سَماءِthe heaven العِزِّof glory مُشرِقَةًradiant

And shine, radiant, from the heaven of glory,
Beam from the sky of glory, radiant
with an enchanting vision of smiling brilliance.
With a laughing vision of brilliant coquetry
عَسىperhaps تَكُفُّcease دُموعٌtears فيكِfor you هامِيَةٌstreaming
لاnot تَطلُعُappears الشَمسُthe sun وَالأَنداءُand the dewdrops فيat آنِone moment
Perhaps the tears streaming for you will cease;
May tears cease in you, impassioned one
the sun and the dew do not appear at the same moment.
Neither sun nor breeze arise at the same time
ياO مَنyou whose هَجَرتُI forsook إِلىfor الأَوطانِthe native lands رُؤيَتَهاseeing her
فَرُحتُso I went away أَشوَقَmost yearning مُشتاقٍone who longs لِأَوطانِfor native lands
O you, whose sight I forsook for my native lands,
O you whose sight I migrated from homelands to see
I went away the most yearning of all who long for native lands.
So I left, longing more than any longing for homelands
أَتَذكُرينَdo you remember حَنينيmy longing فيin الزَمانِtimes past لَهاfor them
وَسَكبِيَand my pouring out الدَمعَthe tears مِنbecause of تَذكارِهاremembering them قانيcrimson
Do you remember my longing for them in days gone by,
Do you remember my yearning through time for them
and the crimson tears I poured out at their remembrance,
And my shedding tears in recalling them, O companion
وَغَبطِيَand my envy of الطَيرَthe birds أَلقاهُI meet it أَصيحُI cry out بِهِto it
لَيتَif only الكَريمَthe Generous One الَّذيwho أَعطاكِgave you أَعطانيgave me
and my envy of each bird I met, crying out to it:
And my envying the bird I cried out to it
If only the Generous One who gave to you had given to me!
If only the generous one who gave you would give me
