كَفىenough عِظَةًas a lesson أَيُّهاO المَنزِلُthe house
Is it where hopes gleam that they set?
You are lesson enough, O house!
حَكَيتَyou mirrored الحَياةَlife وَحالاتِهاand its conditions
فَهَلّاthen why not تَخَطَّيتَyou went beyond ماwhat تَنقُلُyou portray
You have mirrored life and its changing states;
Why, then, did you not rise above what you portray?
أَمِنis it from جُنحِthe darkness of لَيلٍa night إِلىto فَجرِهِits dawn
حِمىًan abode يَزدَهيis adorned وَحِمىًand an abode يَعطُلُis left bare
Can it be that, from a night's darkness to its dawn,
One abode is adorned and another stripped bare?
وَذَلِكَand that one يوحِشُgrows desolate مِنfor lack of رَبَّةٍa mistress

وَذَلِكَand that one مِنthrough رَبَّةٍa mistress يَأهَلُbecomes inhabited
And one lies desolate, bereft of a mistress,
And one is made a home by a mistress.

In your midst, the death-herald answered the bearer of good news,
And the gathering drank from both their cups.

And a father bowed his head between the two,
A man of sorrow, his night pitch-dark.
يَفيءُhe returns إِلىto العَقلِreason فيin أَمرِهِhis plight

وَلَكِنَّهُbut it is القَلبُthe heart لاdoes not يَعقِلُreason
He turns back to reason in his plight,
But the heart—it does not reason.

The rose's branches tumbled away,
And the nightingale flew away from the egg.
وَراحَتand departed حَياةٌa life وَجاءَتand came حَياةa life

And a life departed, and a life came,
And the Changer revealed His power.

And none departs but one who has come,
And none approaches but one who has gone.
كَأَنّيas though I were بِساميwith Sami هَلوُعِdistraught الفُؤادِat heart
إِذاwhenever أَسمَعَتmakes itself heard هَمسَةٌa whisper يَعجَلُhe hastens
I seem to see Sami, distraught at heart,
Hurrying whenever a whisper sounds.

He sees a fate in which he hopes for kindness,
But death's assault bars the way to his hope.

His cheerful face shines for his guests,
Yet between his ribs burns kindled ghada wood.

And he offers them good cheer in a home,
While a home unites him with sorrow.
فَمِنso from غادَةٍa graceful young woman فيamid مَجاليthe splendors of الزِفافِthe wedding

So, from a young woman amid wedding splendors,
To a young woman whose illness is intractable.

And this one lies withdrawn in childbed,
And that one sweeps along in her finery.

وَخانَتهُand betrayed him عَيناهُhis two eyes وَالأَرجُلُand the feet
His heart was divided between the two,
And his eyes and feet betrayed him.
فَياso O نَكَدَmisery الحُرِّof the noble man هَلwill تَنقَضيyou end
وَياand O فَرَحَjoy الحُرِّof the noble man هَلwill تَكمُلُyou be complete
So, O grief of the noble, will you ever end?
And O joy of the noble, will you ever be complete?
وَياand O صَبرَpatience ساميof Sami بَلَغتَyou have reached المَدىthe utmost limit
وَياand O قَلبَهُhis heart السَهلَgentle كَمhow much تَحمِلُyou bear
And O Sami's patience, you have reached the limit,
And O gentle heart of his, how much you bear!
لَقَدindeed زُدتَyou were given more مِنof رِقَّةٍdelicacy كَالصِراطِlike the Sirat bridge
وَدونَand short of صَلابَتِكَyour firmness الجَندَلُstone
Indeed, you were made more delicate, like the Sirat,
Yet stone falls short of your firmness.
يَمُرُّpasses عَلَيكَover you خَليطُa mingled host الخُطوبِof calamities
وَيَجتازُكَand crosses you الخِفُّthe lightly laden وَالمُثقَلُand the heavily burdened
A mingled host of calamities passes over you,
And the lightly laden and the heavily burdened cross you.
وَياand O رَجُلَman الحِلمِof forbearance خُذhold fast بِالرِضىto acceptance
فَذَلِكَfor that مِنfrom مُتَّقٍone who fears God أَجمَلُmore becoming
And O man of forbearance, hold fast to acceptance,
For that better becomes a God-fearing man.
أَتَحسَبُdo you think شَهِداhoney إِناءَthe vessel الزَمانِof Time
وَطينَتُهُand its clay الصابُbitter sap وَالحَنظَلُand colocynth
Do you think Time's vessel holds honey,
Though its clay is bitter sap and colocynth?
وَماand whatever كانَis مِنof مُرِّهِits bitterness يَعتَليrises
وَماand whatever كانَis مِنof حُلوِهِits sweetness يَسفُلُsinks
And whatever bitterness it holds rises,
While whatever sweetness it holds sinks.
وَأَنتَand you الَّذيthe one who شَرِبَdrank المُترَعاتِthe brimming cups
فَأَيُّso which البَواقيof the remnants بِهِabout it تَحفِلُyou care
And you are the one who drank the brimming cups,
So which of the remnants do you care about?
أَفيis it amid ذاthis الجَلالِmajesty وَفيand amid ذاthis الوَقارِdignity
تُخيفُكَfrightens you ضَرّاءُadversity أَوor تُذهِلُbewilders
With this majesty and this dignity,
Can adversity frighten you or bewilder you?
أَلَمdid ... not تَكُنِyou be المُلكَkingship فيin عِزِّهِits glory
وَباعُكَand your reach مِنthan باعِهِits reach أَطوَلُlonger
Were you not kingship in all its glory,
With your reach extending farther than its own?
وَقَولُكَand your word مِنfrom فَوقِabove قَولِthe speech الرِجالِof men
وَفِعلُكَand your action مِنthan فِعلِهِمtheir action أَنبَلُnobler
And your word stands above the words of men,
And your deeds are nobler than theirs.
سَتَعرِفُwill learn دُنياكَyour world مَنwhom ساوَمَتit bargained with
وَأَنand that وَقارَكَyour dignity لاnot يُبذَلُis given away
Your world shall learn with whom it has bargained,
And that your dignity is not for sale.

You are like the Samson of this life,
And all its calamities are a temple.
