They say Rushdi has died; I said: You have spoken truly—

And my sound judgment died that day, and my hopes,

And my pillar, which I held ready against calamities,

And my treasure in the past, and my support in the present,

And my good fortune, which Time betrayed, and my lucky star,

And my pride when I meet men, and my honor.

O Rushdi, throughout your life you lived a master,

And never a slave to rank, authority, or wealth.

And you spared no effort in studying and seeking books of learning,

Nor, at eighty, did you lose interest in them.

And you placed merit in the loftiest station,

And gave men of merit a lofty place.

You did not choose a thousand intimates and companions,

But the one you chose was unique and precious.

I loved you while the whole world loved you,

And loved you still more when those who hated you grew many.

    فوالله ما جاء القياس بأمثال

    And I measured the eminent against you, in your life and after your death;

So, by God, the comparison produced no equals.

And if a person could be ransomed from death,

I would ransom you with my precious life and my kin.
