رحمةmercy اللهGod's علىupon سيدتيmy lady
وسقىand may water اللهGod ثراهاher grave's earth وجزاهاand reward her
God’s mercy be upon my lady,
May God's mercy rest upon my lady.
and may God rain upon her grave and reward her.
And may God water her grave and reward her.
حرمتنيshe denied me الشاشmuslin حتىuntil ذهبتshe departed
فكستنيthen clothed me الخزsilk فيin الموتdeath يداهاher two hands
She denied me even coarse cloth until she was gone;
She denied me muslin until she departed;
in death, her own hands clothed me in silk.
Then in death her hands clothed me in silk.
وحمتنيand she denied me الماءwater حتىuntil احتجبتshe passed from sight
فَسُقِيتُthen I was given to drink الشهدhoney منfrom فيضthe overflow نداهاher bounty
She withheld even water from me until she vanished from sight;
And she denied me water until she passed from sight;
then I was given honey to drink from the overflow of her bounty.
Then I was given honey to drink from her overflowing bounty.
صارbecame ليmine منfrom بعدهاafter her منزلهاher house
والدكاكينand the shops وآلتand passed on ضيعتاهاher two estates
After she was gone, her house became mine,
Her house became mine after her death,
and the shops; her two estates passed to me—
And the shops; her two estates passed to me.
ثروةa fortune قدhad نهضraised up الجوعhunger بهاit
ومشىand walked الحرمانdeprivation فيهاthrough it فبناهاand so built it
a fortune that hunger had raised,
A fortune that hunger had raised up,
and deprivation strode through it and built it.
And deprivation walked through it and so built it.
