والاحتلال يتقى

And the occupying power is wary of

his opinions, and fears them.

وتنقل التيمس ما

يقوله ويطلب

يقوله ويطلب

And The Times reports what

he says and asks for.

ذاك فلان ليس من

ذاك فلان ليس من

يقرا ولا من يكتب

يقرا ولا من يكتب

That fellow, so-and-so, is not one

who reads, nor one who writes.

لا عالم يملأها

لا عالم يملأها

علما ولا مجرّب

علما ولا مجرّب

No scholar to fill it

with learning, nor a man of experience.

وليس بالخطيب إن

قام الملا فخطبوا

قام الملا فخطبوا

Nor is he an orator when

the notables rise and deliver speeches.

مبدؤه لا مبدأ

مبدؤه لا مبدأ

مشربه لا مشرب

مشربه لا مشرب

His principle: no principle.

His creed: no creed.

عند الأمير يفترى

عند الأمير يفترى

عند الوزير يكذب

عند الوزير يكذب

Before the emir he fabricates falsehoods;

before the minister he lies.

وإن تكن وشاية

وإن تكن وشاية

فالمستشار أقرب

فالمستشار أقرب

And if it is a matter of denunciation,

then the adviser is nearer at hand.

عجيبة أموره

عجيبة أموره

والصحف منه أعجب

والصحف منه أعجب

Strange are his doings,

and the newspapers stranger than he.

قالوا له فيها الهما

قالوا له فيها الهما

م الفاضل المهذب

م الفاضل المهذب

In their pages they called him 'the valiant

one, the virtuous, the refined.'

ولقبوه بالسرىّ

ولقبوه بالسرىّ

الشهم فيما لقبوا

الشهم فيما لقبوا

And they styled him 'the noble,

the gallant,' among the titles they bestowed.

أين النهى يا أمّة

أين النهى يا أمّة

يضحك منها الأجنب

يضحك منها الأجنب

Where is your reason, O nation,

at whom the foreigner laughs?
