ينتهى الجود إليه

There was a great man among the Romans,

in whom generosity reached its height.

جاءه يوما حكيم

يشتكي بين يديه

يشتكي بين يديه

One day a wise man came to him,

complaining before him.

قبل النعل وأبدى

أعظم الذل لديه

أعظم الذل لديه

He kissed the sandal and showed

the utmost abasement before him.

فرأى ذلك قوم

فرأى ذلك قوم

أنكروا الأمر عليه

أنكروا الأمر عليه

Then some people saw this

and reproached him for the act.

قال ما قبّلت رج

قال ما قبّلت رج

ليه ولكن أذنيه

ليه ولكن أذنيه

He said, “I did not kiss his

feet, but rather his ears.

إنَّ من كان كهذا

إنَّ من كان كهذا

أذنه في قدميه

أذنه في قدميه

For anyone who is like this

has his ear in his feet.”
