    لم يجن أمثالها قبلي على أحد

    Time—its calamities for me are beyond number;

    Never before me has it inflicted their like on anyone.

    أمّ ولكن بلا قلب ولا كبد

    An uncle who betrays, and a mother with no fidelity;

    A mother, yet with neither heart nor liver.

    She has inflicted all life's cares upon me,

    And before her no mother ever wronged a son.

    When I stretched out my hand to do harm, seeking vengeance

    On her, my father forbade me to stretch out my hand.

    Mercy, mercy, O you phantom, and O

    Mother, be gentle; and O onslaught of passion, slow down.

    وقفت أمس ويومي للأسى وغدي

    I am the wretched, tormented one, forever afflicted;

    I have devoted my yesterday, today, and tomorrow to sorrow.

    I walk behind a phantom that never leaves me,

    As though it were my misery in life, or my anguish.

    ومثل وجدي قلوب الناس لم تجد

    And I forsake love's anguish for the vengeance I pursue;

    And human hearts have never known anguish like mine.

    فضعت بين الهوى والحقد بالرشد

    I fell in love, though my soul could not forget its grudges;

    So between passion and hatred I lost my reason.

    If you, our earthly home, leave us little room for hope,

    In our eternal home are hopes beyond number.

    My childhood, bid farewell; my youth, depart; my death, come!

    My world, vanish; phantom of misery, go away!
